Golf Team Places Ninth at Maine Intercollegiate Championship

BANGOR, Maine – Saint Joseph's College closed out the two-day 2014 Maine Intercollegiate Championship at Bangor Municipal Golf Course in ninth place with 656 team strokes on Sunday afternoon. Sophomore Michael Caron (Gorham, Maine) finished fourth individually with a 147 (71-76) card in the annual championship.

Caron's score is the lowest recorded by a Saint Joseph's golfer in the Maine Championship since the event became a 36-hole tournament in 2006. Chris DeRoche '08, who captured medalist honors with a 149 at the 2006 State Championship, is the only SJC player to post a higher individual finish over the last nine years.

Junior Ryan Berard (Millville, Mass.) finished in a tie for 14th with a career-low 155 (76-79) card and also registered a personal-best round score (76) in the first round on Saturday.

Junior Jason Riley (Dedham, Mass.) (176, T45), sophomore John Marcous (Turner, Maine) (178, T48), and freshman Brandon Labrecque (Gorham, Maine) (182, 51) rounded out the Saint Joseph's quintet in the 2014 Maine Intercollegiate Championship.

For the second-consecutive season and 11th time in the last 16 years, Husson University claimed the Maine Intercollegiate title after recording a 597 team card. University of Southern Maine finished as the runner-up with a 616 collective score while Bates College (619), University of New England (623) and Maine Maritime Academy (629) rounded out the top five competing institutions.

Husson's Greg Martin captured medalist honors, carding a three-under-par 139 (69-70), while fellow Eagle Greg Pike placed second with a 145 (69-76) score. Bowdoin's Thomas Spagnola (146), Caron and USM's Tom Murray (149) closed out the top five individuals in the annual event.

Saint Joseph's is off until next Sunday when the Monks compete in the Thomas Golf Classic at the Waterville Country Club.
