GORHAM, Maine – Saint Joseph's College placed third with a 233 team card in the Southern Maine Cup at the Gorham Country Club on Friday. A unique event, the Southern Maine cup features pairs of golfers playing six holes of best ball, six holes of scramble format and finally six holes of alternate shot golf.
The Monks were led by the pairing of sophomore Michael Caron (Gorham, Maine) and Brendan Woelfel (Lowell, Mass.), which combined to shoot a two-over 73 on the afternoon. Freshman Brandon Labrecque (Gorham, Maine) and senior David Kapelson (Litchfield, N.H.) shot a 79 while juniors Ryan Berard (Millville, Mass.) and Jason Riley (Dedham, Mass.) posted an 81 card.
With a 209 team card, Southern Maine won the annual event for the fourth-consecutive season. Sophomore Tom Murray (Bangor, Maine) and junior Andrew Richards (South Portland, Maine) combined to shoot a two-under par 69 to finish as the top duo on the day.
University of New England (215) finished second and Maine-Farmington (246) placed fourth in the event.
Saint Joseph's will play in the University of New England Invitational at Cape Arundel Golf Club on Tuesday starting at 11:00 AM.
