Monks Finish Fifth at UNE, Another Medalist Honor for Caron

BIDDEFORD, Maine – Sophomore Michael Caron (Gorham, Maine) earned his fourth medalist honor of the 2014 season with a 70 score in the University of New England Invitational at the Cape Arundel Golf Club on Tuesday. Saint Joseph's placed fifth overall with a 323 team card.

Caron finished the event tied with Endicott's Alex Viola for the top spot but collected medalist honors by virtue of matching cards beginning with the most difficult handicap hole. The second-year standout has won three-consecutive tournaments, all played over the last 10 days, with top finishes in four of the seven events in which Saint Joseph's has played this season. For his career, Caron already has six medalist accolades to his credit in less than two complete seasons of collegiate golf.

Today's effort at Cape Arundel counts as the lowest 18-hole score of Caron's NCAA career and is the finest by an SJC golfer since Matt Cotreau '10 shot a 69 to win the UNE Invitational – at the same course – on September 27th, 2007. Only three golfers (Cotreau, Blake Cunningham '01 and Joe Manganaro '05) have posted a lower 18-hole card over the last 15 seasons.

Endicott College claimed top team honors with a 292 card, eight strokes ahead of runner-up University of Southern Maine. University of New England was third (307), Maine Maritime placed fourth (311) and Maine-Farmington rounded out the six-team field with a 365 score.

For the Monks, senior David Kapelson (Litchfield, N.H.) and sophomore John Marcous (Turner, Maine) also posted career-best scores with 80 and 86 cards, respectively, while freshman Matt Galvin (Derry, N.H.) shot an 87 and junior Jason Riley (Dedham, Mass.) checked in with an 88 card.

Saint Joseph's resumes play in the two-day University of Southern Maine Fall Classic at Gorham Country Club this Friday and Saturday.
