Saint Joseph’s Wins Maine Intercollegiate Championship

POLAND, Maine – Junior captain Michael Caron (Gorham, Maine) sank a putt for par on the 18th hole to help Saint Joseph's College edge Husson University by one stroke and claim the second Maine Intercollegiate Championship in program history.

The Monks carded an aggregate 300 score over the first 18 holes and sat in second place behind Southern Maine, which posted a 295 team score on the opening day of the annual championship. With strong winds being a major factor on the second 18, the Monks shot a 307 for a two-day 607 score, one stroke ahead of Husson (608, 306-302), which had won 11 of the last 16 State Championships heading into this year's event.

Freshman Cameron Letourneau (Hebron, Maine) shot a three-over 147 (72-75) to pace the Monks and finish second overall individually. Fellow first-year Adam Hachey (Winthrop, Maine) notched a 150 (73-77) card while Caron posted a 156 (79-77) and freshman Adam Batchelder (Portland, Maine/Cheverus) contributed a 158 (80-78) score. Senior captain Ryan Berard (Millville, Mass.) shot a 159 (76-83).

Letourneau's 147 card is tied for the third-lowest posted by a Saint Joseph's golfer in a 36-hole event, with only Jim Ross (143, 75-68) and Caron (144, 70-74) being ahead of him on the short list. Manganaro and Caron have also posted 147 cards for the Monks.

The Maine Intercollegiate Championship is the program's second – with the first taking place in 2004 when recent SJC Athletics Hall of Fame inductee Joe Manganaro '05 led the Monks with a 68 (33-35) card and collected medalist honors in the process. The team's 607 card is by far the Monks' best score since the state tournament adopted a 36-hole format in 2006. Previously, the top mark by an SJC team was 626 in 2006.

Husson's Daulton Wickenden handed in a four-under-par 140 (68-72) card at the end of play to claim medalist honors by seven strokes.

Southern Maine placed third with a 614 (296-318) score, University of New England was fourth (626, 305-321), and Maine Maritime finished fifth (635, 316-319). Maine-Farmington (635, 313-322), Bates College (637, 309-328), Bowdoin College (654, 320-334), Colby College (669, 330-339), Maine-Presque Isle (681 (345-336), and Thomas College (748, 366-382) rounded out the group of competing institutions in this year's championship.

Saint Joseph's will seek the team's third title this season when the Monks play in the Thomas College Invitational at the Waterville Country Club this Tuesday.

BEYOND THE SCORECARD:

  • Today's performance counts as the first time in program history that all five of the Monks' golfers scored less than 160 in the same 36-hole event
  • Previously, St. Joe's featured four golfers with 160 scores or less just once, as Jim Ross (143), Jim Cilley (155), Jake Huntress (160) and Lonnie Pinette (160) accomplished the feat in the 2001 Maine Athletic Conference Championship
  • With this weekend's win, Saint Joseph's has won a pair of tournaments for the third time in the same season in the last 17 years and first time since 2007 when the Monks captured UNE Invitational and Thomas Invitational crowns
