Monks Finish NEIGA Tourney Tied for Fifth Among DIII Members

BREWSTER, Mass. – The Saint Joseph's College golf team capped the fall portion of the 2015-16 schedule with a fifth-place finish (629, 312-317) in the 2015 New England Intercollegiate Golf Association (NEIGA) Championship at The Captains Golf Course on Sunday and Monday. Junior Michael Caron (Gorham, Maine) paced the Monks with a 152 (75-77) card and placed sixth among NCAA DIII participants.

With the effort, Caron claims All-New England Team honors – given to the top six finishers for all three NCAA divisions - for the third-consecutive season. As a freshman, Caron finished eighth out of 189 golfers overall in the 2013 NEIGA Championship and last fall, he finished in a tie for sixth in the regional tournament.

For the Monks, the 629 team-card is by far the best effort posted by the team since the 2002 campaign with the previous top score being a 663 in the 2007 event. The 2014 club placed 18th with a 689 score.

For Saint Joseph's, freshman Adam Hachey (Winthrop, Maine) posted a 154 (77-77) and finished in a tie for 10th among DIII golfers while first-year Cam Letourneau (Hebron, Maine) tied for 28th (158, 78-80), senior Ryan Berard (Millville, Mass.) tied for 63rd (165, 82-83), and senior Jason Riley (Dedham, Mass.) finished in a tie for 94th (177, 89-88).

Rhode Island College, the 2015 GNAC Champion, finished as the top NCAA DIII program with a 618 (307-311) card, six strokes ahead of Salem State University (320-304) and Babson College (305-319) as the Vikings and Beavers capped the event tied for second place. Nichols College placed fourth (626, 308-318) while Saint Joseph's and Southern Maine (317-312) finished in a tie for fifth out of 22 NCAA DIII programs.

Individually, RIC's Jonathan Cooper collected medalist honors with a 147 (73-74), on stroke ahead of Husson's Daulton Wickenden, who shot a 148 (75-73). Day one leader Zachary Temple of Castleton State posted a DIII-low 70 card on Sunday and slipped to third with a 79 (149) on Monday while Husson's Greg Martin (150, 73-77) and Babson's Pranav Mohan (151, 72-79) finished fourth and fifth, respectively.
