WARWICK, R.I. – Johnson & Wales University (RI) had an impressive showing on Day One of the 2017 GNAC Men's Golf Championship at Valley Country Club, shooting a collective 297 (+9) to take control of first place heading into Sunday's competition. Golfers will tee off at approximately 9:45 AM on Sunday to complete the 36-hole, two-day event.
JWU's Christian Maselli and Alex Parente shot a 69 and 70, respectively, on Day One to lead the way for first and second place in the 45-player field. The University of Massachuetts Dartmouth's Jackson Mitchell currently sits in third with a 72, while there is a four-way tie for fourth place (74) between Worcester State University's Mike Jezierski and Eddie Peladeau, Rhode Island College's Michael Caparco, and Suffolk University's Demetri Stamoulis.
Host RIC sits in second place with a team score of 308 (+20), followed by UMass Dartmouth in third place with a 311 (+23) and Suffolk in fourth with a 312 (+24). Defending GNAC champion Saint Joseph's College of Maine sits in fifth place with a 316 (+28).
For Saint Joseph's, senior Brandon Labrecque (Gorham, Maine) finished the first 18 holes in a tie for 10th with a 77 card, junior Cam Letourneau (Hebron, Maine) is currently 14th (78), sophomore Brandon Donovan (Auburn, Maine) is tied for 15th (79), junior Adam Hachey (Winthrop, Maine) is tied for 25th (82), and junior Adam Batchelder (Portland, Maine/Cheverus) is tied for 29th (83).
The student-athletes with the five lowest scores at the end of Day Two on Sunday will receive All-Conference honors, while the individual medalist will be crowned the 2017 GNAC Men's Golf Player of the Year. The tournament winning team will receive the GNAC's automatic bid to the NCAA Division III Tournament in the spring.
