Monks Kick Off 2019 Campaign with Second-Place Finish

GORHAM, Maine – The Saint Joseph's College golf team kicked off the 2019 season with a second place finish in a tri-match with host University of Southern Maine and University of Maine-Farmington at the Gorham Country Club on Friday. The Monks, led by first-year skipper Jason Riley '16 in his collegiate coaching debut, registered a 312 team card in the opener.

University of Southern Maine won the event with a 298 collective score after three Huskies turned in the day's top marks. Senior Tristan Dundas (Abbotsford, B.C.) claimed medalist honors with a one-over par 72 card.

Saint Joseph's senior Brendan Donovan (Auburn, Maine) and freshman Trevor Flanagan (Monmouth, Maine) both turned in 76 cards and finished tied for fourth overall. First-year Cody Rizzo (West Gardiner, Maine) posted a 79 and senior Tyler Johnson (Windham, Maine) notched an 81 to round out the Monks' scorers.

Sophomore Nathan Varle (Saco, Maine) rounded out the SJC quintet with a 95 card while junior Brian Maguire (Braintree, Mass.) (85), Sullivan Smith (Pownal, Maine) (87) and senior Sean Peschier (Watertown, Mass.) (94) participated as non-scoring individuals.

Saint Joseph's returns to the links on Tuesday (11:00 AM) when the Monks host the annual John Queenan Memorial at the Point Sebago Golf Club in Casco.

The University of Southern Maine golf team opened its 2019 fall schedule with a strong performance Friday defeating Saint Joseph's College and the University of Maine at Farmington in an 18-hole event at the Gorham Country Club.

Huskies posted a four-man aggregate score of 298 to take the top spot.  Saint Joseph's came in second with a 312, and UMaine Farmington posted a score of 348.  USM showed its depth as all five players in the lineup broke 80.

Senior captain Tristan Dundas (Abbotsford, B.C.) led the Huskies with a 1-over par 72.  Classmates Parker Sanderson (Bangor, Maine) and Brendon Croteau (Lewiston, Maine) tied for second with 4-over 75's.  Three players, USM senior Greg Kalagias (Saco, Maine/Thornton Academy) and the Saint Joseph's duo of senior Brendan Donovan (Auburn, Maine/St. Dominic) and freshman Trevor Flanagan (Monmouth, Maine/Monmouth Academy), tied for fourth place at 76.

The best round of the day was turned in by USM senior Kyle Morin (Lewiston, Maine).  Playing as an individual, Morin carded an even par 71.  Morin birdied the opening hole before bogeying the second and ninth holes to go out in 1-over 36.  He opened the back nine with a birdie at number 10, then bogeyed 11 to stand at 1 over.  A birdie at the par 4 16th got Morin back to even par for the day.  Morin's 71 was a career low in competition at GCC.

USM senior Ryan Dee (Houlton, Maine), also playing as an individual, turned in a 5-over par 76, giving the Huskies seven players finishing in the 70's.

The Huskies are back out on the links on Tuesday (11 a.m.) playing in the John Queenan Memorial hosted by Saint Joseph's at the Point Sebago GC in Casco, Maine.
