PORTLAND, Maine – Sophomores Drew Mathieu (Windham, Maine) and Devin Coonradt (Methuen, Mass.) combined to shoot a three-under par 69 (34-35) to lead Saint Joseph's College to a top finish with a 215 team score in the 2022 Southern Maine Cup held at the Riverside Golf Course on Thursday.
A unique event, the Southern Maine cup features a Ryder Cup format with pairs of golfers playing six holes of best ball, six holes of scramble format and finally six holes of alternate shot golf.
For the Monks, the USM Cup victory is the program's fifth overall and first since 2015 when St. Joe's edged runner-up University of New England by two-strokes. The Huskies, who finished second with a 220 card this afternoon, have won their annually hosted event in eight of the last 10 seasons, including all four since the Monks claimed the 2015 crown.
Saint Joseph's also won the scramble tournament in 2002, 2004, and 2006.
Senior Sean McDonough (Concord, N.H.) and freshman Dante Ceppetelli (Dover, N.H.) tied for second with a 72 card while senior Trevor Flanagan (Monmouth, Maine) and sophomore Alex Beecher (South Portland, Maine) recorded a 74 score and tied for sixth overall.
UMaine-Farmington placed third with a 242 (+26) card and Central Maine Community College was fourth with a 250 (+34) collective score.
Saint Joseph's will play in the University of New England Invitational at the Cape Arundel Golf Club tomorrow at 10:00 AM.
