Saint Joseph's to Add Men's & Women's Alpine Skiing as Varsity Sports

STANDISH, Maine - Saint Joseph's College Director of Athletics Brian Curtin has announced that the institution will add men's and women's alpine skiing as its newest varsity sports.

A national search to fill the program's full-time head coaching position will begin immediately with the selected individual to be named later this summer. The head coach will oversee a club team this winter while recruiting throughout the academic year in preparation of fielding competitive varsity squads during the 2019-20 season.

The addition of alpine skiing marks the first time since the 2012-13 academic year that the college has added new varsity sports. That year, St. Joe's introduced men's and women's indoor and outdoor track & field as varsity programs.

"We continually strive to find opportunities that advance our athletics department and this is certainly one of the more exciting ways," adds Curtin. "After extensive research and the support of President Dlugos, we felt strongly that adding men's and women's Alpine Ski makes a lot of sense and fits in so well with our goals and our surrounding resources."

The Monks' home training course will be Shawnee Peak in Bridgton. The mountain features over 40 trails, seven glades, and three terrain parks and – having been in operation for 80 years – is the longest operating ski resort in Maine.

The addition of the alpine skiing programs will bring the total number of athletic teams at Saint Joseph's to 21 (10 men, 11 women). Currently, the list of SJC women's varsity sports include basketball, cross country, field hockey, lacrosse, soccer, softball, swimming, indoor and outdoor track & field, and volleyball while the men's docket includes baseball, basketball, cross country, golf, lacrosse, soccer, swimming, and indoor and outdoor track & field.
