Standish, ME - The University of Maine Farmington held on to
defeat St. Joe's 54-52 in front of a large crowd in the home opener
at the Alfond Center. Farmington outscored St. Joe's by one point
in each half to earn the hard-fought road victory.
Leading the way for UMF was Matt St. John with 17 points on 5 of 8
shooting from behind the arc. Junior Marcus Alexander (Niceville,
FL) had 16 points and 6 boards fro St. Joe's while freshman Elbie
Murphy (Loudonville, NY) had 10 points and 6 rebounds.
Farmington went up by 7 with 2:47 to play on two free throws by Tom
Labrie but the Monks cut it to 4 as Alexander and Murphy made free
throws. Senior captain Chad Pulkkinen (Windham, ME) stole the ball
with 56 seconds to play and Alexander scored on an offensive
rebound to bring St. Joe's within 2, 54-52. Pulkinnen had another
steal with 30 seconds to go but the Monks missed two jumpers in the
final 10 seconds of the game.
The St. Joe's squad returns to action on 11/30 at Lyndon State (VT)
at 7:30 p.m.
