NCAA DIII MEN'S BASKETBALL TOURNAMENT FIRST ROUND PREVIEW

Sixth-year Head Coach Rob Sanicola '99 has guided the Monks to a 21-7 overall record and a 12-6 tilt in GNAC contests this season en route to capturing the program's first GNAC Championship. Third-seeded St. Joe's defeated #4 Emmanuel College, 74-72, in a double-overtime title game at the Alfond on Saturday. Chris Davis ‘11 (New York, NY) led the victors with 16 points and GNAC First Teamer Ray Eatmon ‘10 (Huntington, NY) added 13 points and seven boards in the thrilling triumph. SJC point guard Scot Vachon ‘09 (Schenectady, NY) tallied eight points, seven caroms and five assists and collected GNAC Tournament Most Valuable Player honors. Eatmon leads five Saint Joseph's players who net more than nine points per game with a 12.8 average output and also is the team leader in rebounding (9.3 RPG) and field goal percentage (.595). Eatmon and Elbie Murphy ‘09 (Schenectady, NY) joined Vachon on the All-Tournament Team.

The Bridgewater State College Bears are 20-6 overall and completed their MASCAC docket with a 10-2 record this year under MASCAC Co-Head Coach of the Year Joe Farroba, who is in his 17th season as the Bears' leader. #2 Bridgewater defeated top-seeded Salem State, 77-66, in the Massachusetts State College Athletic Conference Championship on Saturday to advance to the NCAA's. Stace Garrick ‘09 (West Warwick, RI) scored 17 points to help lead the Bears to their third conference title. 6'6" center Roland Millien ‘09 (Stoughton, MA) leads the team with 16.5 points and 9.2 caroms per game, while his 56.1 % (129-230) rate from the field and 83.9% (167-199) effort from the line also rank as team-highs. Millien received MASCAC First Team All-Conference honors for the second straight year following the 2009 regular season.

The NCAA DIII Tournament berth is the second for Saint Joseph's and fourth for Bridgewater State. The Monks last played in the tourney in 2003 as an NCAA DIII Independent, while the Bears' last appearance was in 2006. The first-round opponents have met just once on the hardwood, as Bridgewater defeated St. Joes', 66-49, in the Bears' tip-off tournament on November 17th, 2006.

The winner of the first-round matchup will play at Middlebury College (24-3, 8-1 NESCAC) on Saturday, March 7th at 7:00 PM.
