Monks Top-Ranked Team in Maine, Petzy Earns Weekly Honor

STANDISH, ME - With 41 points, Saint Joseph's College (9-1, 4-0 GNAC) is the top-ranked team in the latest Maine Men's Basketball Coaches and Writers Association Poll. Also, sophomore guard Chris Petzy (Kensington, NH) has been recognized for his play during the fourth reporting period of the season with MMBCWA Co-Player of the Week honors.

The Monks, who received five votes in last week's poll, received four first-place votes in the January 11th poll and edged out Colby (40 points) for the top spot. Bowdoin (33), Bates (19) and Thomas (11) round out the top five vote-getters for the week.

Last week, St. Joe's topped Bowdoin, the top-ranked team in the MMBCWA Poll for the last two weeks, 83-82, in Brunswick on January 6th and cruised past Emmanuel College, 86-65, in a rematch of the 2009 GNAC Championship game at the Alfond Center on January 9th.

In the two victories last week, Petzy averaged 21 points and shot 81.3% (13-16) from the floor, 88.9% (8-9) from the FT line and was a perfect 8-8 from beyond the arc. The sophomore guard dropped a career-high 22 points, and was perfect from the floor and the line, to lead the Monks over Bowdoin and netted 20 in the triumph over Emmanuel three days later.

Petzy shares the weekly honor with Colby senior forward Adam Choice (Newport, RI), who averaged 23.5 points, 6.5 caroms, 2.5 steals and 2.0 blocks in a 2-0 week for the Mules. Through 10 games, Petzy is averaging 12.4 points per game.

In the weekly MMBCWA statistical report, Ray Eatmon '10 (Huntington, NY) ranks as the leader in blocked shots with 23 and Petzy ranks second in three-point FG percentage with a 51.5% (10-17) success rate from beyond the arc. Rashon Jones '11 (Bridgeport, CT) is tied for third with a 1.3 blocks per game average and Petzy also ranks fifth in both field goal percentage (56.9%, 41-72) and free-throw percentage (86.2%, 25-29). Tyler Kelley '11 (Saco, ME) is 6th in three-point percentage (41.1%, 24-58) and 7th in scoring average (16.8 PPG).

St. Joe's will take on GNAC rival Norwich University (6-4, 1-2 GNAC) tonight in Northfield, VT at 7:00 PM.
