MMBCWA Tabs Kelley as Player of the Week, Monks Ranked 3rd

STANDISH, ME - Saint Joseph's junior guard Tyler Kelley (Saco, ME/Thornton Academy) has been named as the Maine Men's Basketball Coaches and Writers Association Player of the Week for the 2/15-2/21 reporting period.

Kelley helped lead the Monks to a 2-0 conference week with 22.5 points, 2.5 boards, 2.5 steals and 2.0 assists per game averages. He shot a blistering 62% (8-13) from three-point range and 64% (18-28) overall during the week, and poured in a career-high 31 points off a 13-18 effort from the field against Mount Ida 2/20.

For the fifth consecutive week the Monks are ranked third in the MMBCWA Poll. Colby (19-5) is the #1 team, with 55 points and all 11 first-place votes, for the sixth straight week and Bates (14-11) is second with 38 points. St. Joe's (19-6, 35pts), Thomas (17-11, 14pts) and Bowdoin (13-12, 13pts) round out the top five and UMF (8), UMFK (1) and UNE (1) also received votes this week.

Individual player rankings through February 21st:

  • Chris Petzy '12 (Kensington, NH) leads the state in three-point efficiency (44.8%, 43-96), is 4th in FT% (78.5%, 51-65) and 15th in scoring (13.9 PPG)
  • Ray Eatmon '10 (Huntington, NY) and Rashon Jones '11 (Bridgeport, CT) are tied with USM's Will Clemmer for the state-lead with 1.6 blocks per game. Eatmon is also 4th in assists (3.5 APG), 5th in FG% (56.5%, 104-184) and 6th in rebounding (8.2 RPG). Jones 8th in FT% (75%, 48-64), 10th in FG% (53.4%, 71-133), 13th in rebounding (6.5 RPG) and tied with teammate Julio Vazquez '13 (Waterbury, CT), among two others, for 16th in assists (2.6 APG).
  • Kelley is 3rd in 3FG% (42.7%, 50-117) and in a three-way tie for 12th in scoring with a 14.5 PPG average.
  • Zach O'Brien '12 (Schenectady, NY) is third in assists (4.0 APG) and 11th in scoring with 14.6 PPG through 25 contests.

Saint Joseph's will host a GNAC Quarterfinal contest tonight against Lasell College at 7:00 PM.
