2010-11 Monks Basketball Schedule Announced

STANDISH, ME – The official Saint Joseph's College Men's Basketball schedule has been announced and the Monks have 25 games on the slate for the 2010-11 docket.

St. Joe's will play 18 conference contests and seven non-league games this winter, highlighted by a matchup against Davidson College, which advanced to the Elite 8 in the 2008 NCAA DI Tournament, on December 30th in North Carolina. The contest will be the third meeting between the Monks and Wildcats, as the Royal Blue traveled south in 1990 and again in 1992 to face the Division I stalwart.

Saint Joseph's will open the season with a road game against University of New England (8:00 PM) on November 17th, with the Monks looking to extend their 38-game win streak against The Nor'easters on opening night.

The Monks' home-opener will take place on November 23rd with a 7:00 PM contest against University of Maine-Farmington. The Beavers captured the North Atlantic Conference crown and advanced to the 2010 NCAA DIII Tournament, where they defeated Bridgewater State in the opening round.

Five days later St. Joe's will play at Southern Maine (7:30 PM), where the Royal Blue will attempt to retain possession of the coveted Costello Cup – awarded to the winner of the annual rivalry game – for the third straight season.

St. Joe's will travel to Bangor for an intense matchup against Husson University (7:00 PM) on December 1st and the Royal Blue will host Emerson College (12:00 PM) three days later in the 2010-11 Great Northeast Athletic Conference opener for both squads. Johnson & Wales comes to town on December 8th for a 7:00 PM tip-off and Saint Joseph's heads to Suffolk University (1:00 PM) on December 11th in the team's final game before Christmas Break.

The Monks return to campus early and departs to North Carolina for the Davidson contest, which is set for a 7:00 PM tip-off at 5,200-seat John M. Belk Arena. While there, the team plans on seeing the sights with Duke University and University of North Carolina being possibilities.

The Monks then return to Maine and kick off the New Year by hosting in-state rival Bowdoin College (7:00 PM) on January 6th. Four conference games follow over the next 11 days, as St. Joe's plays at Emmanuel (1/8, 3:00 PM), hosts Norwich (1/11, 7:00 PM) and travels to Lasell (1/15, 3:00 PM) before facing off against reigning GNAC Champion Albertus Magnus College in New Haven, CT (3:00 PM) on January 17th.

Saint Joseph's plays its final non-conference tilt of the season two days later when Bates College comes to "The Lake" for a 7:30 PM tip. Following the battle with the Bobcats, the Monks play out the string with 11 conference contests over the next 30 days.

The stretch begins with home games against Mount Ida (1/22, 3:00 PM) and Rivier (1/25, 7:00 PM) and continues with a road matchup against Emerson College (1/27, 7:00 PM). Albertus Magnus makes the trek north to the Alfond Center for a 3:00 PM tip-off on January 29th, and Emmanuel (7:30 PM) sits on deck for a January 31st contest in Standish.

After a home game versus Suffolk (7:30 PM) on February 3rd, the Monks go on to play four of their last five contests on the road, beginning with a trip to Vermont against the Cadets of Norwich University (3:00 PM) on February 5th. The Royal Blue heads south to Rhode Island three days later to take on Johnson & Wales (7:30 PM) and returns home on February 12th for the team's final regular-season game at the Alfond Center – a 3:00 PM tip against Lasell College.

The Monks close out the regular season with road trips to Rivier (2/15, 7:00 PM) and Mount Ida (2/19, 1:00 PM) with plans on participating in the GNAC Tournament, which begins with the quarterfinal round on February 22nd, for the third consecutive season. The semifinals take place on February 24th and the championship will be played on February 26th. The highest seed hosts throughout tournament play.

In eight seasons as the Monks' bench general, Head Coach Rob Sanicola '99 has posted a 119-72 (.623) record and led the Royal Blue to an NCAA DIII Tournament appearance in 2009 and a trip to the ECAC DIII New England Championship game in 2007.
