GNAC Tabs Petzy as Men's Basketball Player of the Week

STANDISH, ME – The Great Northeast Athletic Conference weekly accolades have been released and Saint Joseph's College junior guard Chris Petzy (Kensington, NH/Exeter) has been selected as the Men's Basketball Player of the Week.

Petzy averaged 20.0 PPG and 6.5 RPG in a 1-1 week for the Monks and scored a career-high 31 points in an 84-80 double-overtime win over Johnson & Wales on December 8th. The junior guard nailed a difficult three-point shot with seven seconds remaining in the first overtime frame to tie the contest and force a second extra period.

The junior sharpshooter heads into Christmas Break tied for the team-lead in scoring with a 17.4 PPG average and is the Monks' top free-throw shooter with a 78.9% (30-38) mark. He also ranks second on the team in both field goal percentage (46.3, 38-82) and rebounding (4.6 RPG).

For the Monks, this is the first time the program has garnered a pair of GNAC top-player honors in the same season since Elbie Murphy '08 earned back to back weekly accolades in December of 2007.

For Petzy, the conference weekly honor is the first of his career. Teammate Tyler Kelley '11 (Saco, ME) collected the same honor on November 29th.

Petzy also collected Maine Men's Basketball Coaches and Writers Association Weekly Honor Roll mention for his efforts in the Monks' two games last week.

Through 60 career games, Petzy has scored 627 points (10.5 PPG) with a 46% (222-483) field-goal percentage and a 72.7% (96-132) FT percentage. His three-point success rate currently stands at 41.8% (87-208).

Saint Joseph's (5-2, 2-1 GNAC) will next play at Davidson College on December 30th. Tip-off for the game against the NCAA DI opponent is slated for 7:00 PM.
