STANDISH, ME – The Great Northeast Athletic Conference has released its weekly honors and Monks Basketball freshman guard Matthew Medeiros (Westport, MA) has been selected as the Rookie of the Week.
Medeiros collects the top rookie honor after averaging 10.3 points, 3.0 rebounds and 2.3 assists in a 3-0 week for Saint Joseph's. He netted a career-high 15 points off a 5-9 performance from the field in a win over Rivier College on January 25th.
Through 19 games for the 14-5 Monks, Medeiros leads the Royal Blue with a 46.4% (26-56) three-point success rate and ranks fourth on the team in scoring (7.2 PPG).
Medeiros also earned his third Maine Men's Basketball Coaches and Writers Association Weekly Honor Roll mention of the season this week and has been listed on the GNAC Honor Roll on two occasions as a freshman. The top rookie honor is the first of his career.
Medeiros' development has been a key factor in the Monks' successful season. St. Joe's sits atop the GNAC standings with an 11-1 league record and has won five straight and nine of the last 10 contests.
Saint Joseph's will host GNAC-rival Suffolk University on Thursday at 7:30 PM.
