Petzy Named Player of the Week, Monks Ranked 1st in Maine

STANDISH, ME – SJC senior guard Chris Petzy (Kensington, N.H.) has been selected as the Maine Men's Basketball Coaches and Writers Association (MMBCWA) Player of the Week and the Monks are ranked as the top team in the State of Maine, according to the first MMBCWA Poll of the season.

The 3-0 Monks received 42 points in the weekly poll, which is voted upon by NCAA DIII and NAIA head coaches across the State of Maine. Bowdoin College is currently ranked second with 38 points while University of Southern Maine is third with 28 points.

Petzy netted a career-high 33 points in a 70-68 victory over Bowdoin on November 22nd and went 7-11 from downtown in the triumph. The senior co-captain added 11 points in an OT win over University of Southern Maine on Sunday. He also garnered Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) Weekly Honor Roll mention for his efforts in the two victories.

Petzy's 33 points versus Bowdoin is the most scored by an SJC player since Elbie Murphy '09 netted 34 against Lincoln University on February 24th, 2007. His previous career-high - 31 points - came in an 84-80 win over Johnson & Wales on December 8th, 2010.

Also, his three-point tally in the win over the Polar Bears ranks the second-most made by a Monks player in the history of the program. Chad Pulkkinen '07 and former teammate Tyler Kelley '11 also made seven shots from downtown while donning the Royal Blue. Several St. Joe's players have made eight trifectas in a game, with Carl Howell '99 being the latest to accomplish the feat (12/2/98 vs. Atlantic Union).

Through three tilts Petzy paces the Royal Blue in three-pointers made (8) and ranks second on the team in both scoring (19.0 PPG) and rebounding (5.0 RPG)

Saint Joseph's (3-0) will host Husson University on Wednesday night at 7:30 PM.
