Monks Improve to 6-1 with 84-67 Win Over Suffolk University

BOSTON, MA - Saint Joseph's College (6-1, 2-1 GNAC) earned an 84-67 victory over Suffolk University (4-5, 1-2 GNAC) in Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) men's basketball action on Saturday afternoon.

Senior Zach O'Brien (Schenectady, N.Y.) netted a team-high 23 points to lead the Monks to their sixth victory in seven games this year as they improve to 2-1 in conference action this season.

Junior Colin Halpin (Melrose, Mass.) had a season-high 26 points to lead all scorers as the Rams now head into the winter break.

A 14-2 run by the Monks over a six minute span would be the difference in the contest after the Rams managed to even the game at 62 with eight minutes remaining on a Halpin layup.

Senior Chris Petzy (Kensington, N.H.) would answer nineteen seconds later with two of his 12 points to put the visitors up a pair. The Monks would not rescind the lead for the remainder of the contest.

O'Brien would follow connecting on a pair of jumpers and two free throws, before sophomore Matthew Medeiros (Westport, Mass.) put the game away for good hitting consecutive three-pointers to give the Monks a 76-64 lead with a little over two minutes remaining in the game.

Medeiros finished the game with 19 points on 5-for-6 shooting from three-point land, and the Monks were a perfect 5-for-5 as a team in the second half from behind the arc.

Junior Chris Torres (Brockton, Mass.) scored 16 points for Suffolk, while freshman Carlos De La Cruz (Marlborough, Mass.) was a perfect 3-for-3 from beyond the arc in the first half scoring his nine points in the contest.

St. Joe's will be idle until December 31 when they take on WPI in a non-conference matchup beginning at 2:00pm. Suffolk will be back in action on January 7, 2012 when they host Albertus Magnus College in a GNAC matchup at the Regan Gymnasium beginning at 1:00pm.
