Basketball Teams to Host GNAC Tourney Doubleheader

STANDISH, ME - Saint Joseph's College will host a Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) Basketball Tournament opening-round doubleheader on Tuesday night. The Monks' men's and women's hoops teams have both secured the #2 seed in the playoffs.

The women capped the 2011-12 campaign with an 18-7 record including a 12-1 slate against conference foes en route to earning the #2 seed in the GNAC tourney. The Monks will host #7 Albertus Magnus College (14-11, 6-7 GNAC) at 5:30 PM on Tuesday night.

Head Coach Mike McDevitt '83, 374-145 (.721) over 19 seasons as the SJC skipper, guided the Royal Blue to the GNAC semifinals as the #3 seed last winter. The Monks' only setback this season came at the hands of #1 Emmanuel College last Saturday.

The men finished the regular season with a 17-8 overall record and played to a 13-5 mark versus GNAC opponents this winter. With the #2 seed, St. Joe's will host #7 Mount Ida College (9-16, 6-12 GNAC) at 7:30 PM on Tuesday evening.

Ninth-year Head Coach Rob Sanicola '99 carries a 156-88 (.639) career record into the 2012 GNAC playoffs and has now led the Monks to five consecutive conference tourney appearances. Saint Joseph's, the most successful GNAC program over the last five years (65-25, .722 in conference play), captured the 2009 GNAC Championship and fell to Johnson & Wales University in the conference championship last winter.

The men's and women's programs have combined to post a 17-5 (9-2 women, 8-3 men) record at the Harold Alfond Center this season. Historically speaking, the two teams have been nearly unbeatable when playing on the SJC campus as the men's and women's hoopsters have combined to record an astounding 587-160 (.786) mark over the last 41 years.
