Monks Prevail in Low-Scoring Affair

STANDISH, ME – Saint Joseph's (10-6, 6-4 GNAC) edged Johnson & Wales University (9-8, 8-2 GNAC), 49-41, in a defensive battle at the Harold Alfond Center on Monday evening. Junior forward Nicholas Jobin (Westbrook, Maine) registered 13 points and nine rebounds in the low-scoring affair.

Both teams struggled to find consistency on the offensive end as the conference counterparts combined to shoot 34% (34-100) from the field, including a subpar 19.5% (8-41) effort from three-point distance, on the evening. The Monks carried a 21-16 lead into intermission and, with the help of solid defensive play and timely rebounding, managed to hold off the Wildcats to claim an important win over one of the top teams in the conference standings.

The low scoring totals are noteworthy for a storied Saint Joseph's program, as the combined tally in tonight's game is the lowest ever posted in a Monks victory, just one point fewer than the 91 put up by the Royal Blue in a 46-45 win over Bentley College on November 24th, 1981. Tonight's 48 points is the second-fewest ever scored by Saint Joseph's in a victory and also ranks as the lowest total the Monks have posted versus a GNAC opponent, win or loss.

For Johnson & Wales, 41 points ranks as the lowest total the Wildcats have scored in the nine-year tenure of Head Coach Jamie Benton.

For the Monks, junior guard Matthew Medeiros (Westport, Mass.) scored 12 points, senior guard Julio Vazquez (Waterbury, Conn.) added four points, four assists and three steals and junior forward Krubiel Workie (Denver, Colo.) chipped in five points and eight rebounds.

For the Wildcats, junior guard Curtis Lucas (Providence, R.I.) scored 13, junior forward Esaie Touze (Providence, R.I.) produced seven points and seven boards and freshman guard Quarry Greenway (Westchester, N.Y.) contributed eight points, four caroms and three assists.

Saint Joseph's shot 36.5% (19-52) from the field, 21.1% (4-19) from downtown and 46.7% (7-15) from the FT line while Johnson & Wales shot 31.2% (15-48) from the floor, 18.2% (4-22) from three-point land and 63.6% (7-11) from the charity stripe.

With the win, Saint Joseph's improves to 7-5 in the history of the series with Johnson & Wales.

Both teams take on GNAC foes on the road on Thursday when Saint Joseph's plays at Emmanuel College in a 7:00 PM tip-off while Johnson & Wales faces Mount Ida College at 6:00 PM.
