Medeiros Claims First Team All-State Honors

STANDISH, ME - The 2013 Maine Men's Basketball Coaches and Writers Association (MMBCWA) yearly honors have been released and Saint Joseph's College junior guard Matthew Medeiros (Westport, Mass.) has earned First Team All-State accolades.

Medeiros, a first-time All-State honoree, led Saint Joseph's in scoring (15.3 PPG), three-pointers made (70) and attempted (192), and was second on the squad in field goals made (131), free throws made (81), free-throw percentage (78.6%) and assists (58) during his junior season.

Medeiros led the state with 70 three-pointers made and ranked fourth among Maine's 11 NCAA DIII programs in scoring last season. He also led the GNAC in three-point field goals and ranked sixth in the conference in freebies made and seventh in both free-throw success and total points (413).

With 164 trifectas made over his first three seasons, only one player in program history - Stephen Chase '93 - has made more three-pointers through their junior season. Chase, the Monks' all-time three-point field goals leader (311), made 214 shots from downtown during his first three college campaigns.

Also included in the final MMBCWA report of the season is the State of Maine Coaches Poll, which has Saint Joseph's (17-10, 11-7 GNAC) ranked third with a pair of first-place votes.

St. Joe's junior forward Nicholas Jobin (Westbrook, Maine) capped the year ranked fourth in field goal percentage (56.5%, 144-255) and eighth in scoring (13.8 PPG) and sophomore guard Steve Simonds (Steep Falls, Maine) closed out his first year as a starter with the highest free throw percentage (89.3%, 50-56) in the state.
