Medeiros Takes MMBCWA & GNAC Honors

STANDISH, ME – Saint Joseph's College senior Matthew Medeiros (Westport, Mass.) has earned Maine Men's Basketball Coaches and Writers Association (MMBCWA) Co-Player of the Week and Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) weekly honor roll accolades for his play in three contests last week.

Medeiros averaged 24.7 points, 3.7 rebounds and 3.7 assists per game while shooting 63.2% (24-38) from the floor and 56.7% (17-30) from three-point distance in a 3-0 week for Saint Joseph's. The senior sharpshooter netted 18 in an 82-63 victory over Johnson & Wales on Tuesday, poured in 27 in a 92-70 triumph against Suffolk on Thursday, and tallied 29 points in a 96-87 2OT win over Rivier on Saturday. Medeiros made seven three-pointers in each of the victories over Suffolk and Rivier and became the 36th player in program history to reach the 1,000-point milestone in the triumph over the Raiders on Saturday.

The senior shares the MMBCWA weekly honor with Bowdoin College junior center John Swords.

Through eight games this season, Medeiros is averaging 16.8 points, 4.0 rebounds and 2.4 assists while shooting 51.2% (43-84) from the floor, 49.2% (32-65) from three-point distance and 84.2% (16-19) from the free throw line. The senior guard currently leads the GNAC in three-pointers made and ranks third in the conference in three-point efficiency as of December 12th.

The contest versus Rivier was the final game of the 2013 calendar year for Saint Joseph's, as the Monks do not play again until January 4th when the team plays the first of two tilts in the Catholic University Classic Tournament in Washington, D.C.
