GNAC Tabs Simonds as Player of the Week

STANDISH, Maine – Saint Joseph's College senior guard Steve Simonds (Steep Falls, Maine) has been selected as the Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) Men's Basketball Player of the Week, as announced by the league on Monday afternoon.

Simonds scored 37 points with five assists, four rebounds and three steals in a 105-104 overtime loss to Anna Maria on Saturday, the Monks' lone contest of the week. The senior guard was 7-of- 11 from three-point distance, and 13-of-19 overall, while becoming the 38th member of the Monks' 1,000-Point Club in the contest.

The third-year starter currently leads the conference in points (374), three-pointers made (62), three-point percentage (49.6%) and free-throw percentage (86.8%). He also ranks second in the GNAC in scoring average (22.0 PPG), third in rebounding average (8.0 RPG), and fourth in minutes per game (33.0 MPG), field goals made (123) and total rebounds (136).

For Simonds, the Conference Player of the Week honor is the first of his career. He became the first Saint Joseph's player to garner D3Hoops.com Team of the Week accolades last reporting period.

Simonds is the eighth SJC men's basketball player to collect GNAC Player of the Week mention and first since former teammate Nicholas Jobin '14 claimed the honor on January 27th, 2014. Current Assistant Coach Elbie Murphy '09 and Tyler Kelley '11 both earned a pair of weekly honors during their respective careers while Scot Vachon '09, Ray Eatmon '10, Zach O'Brien '12 and Chris Petzy '12 were selected as the GNAC Player of the Week on one occasion apiece.

Saint Joseph's (8-9, 6-5 GNAC) will host GNAC-rival Rivier University on Wednesday at 7:30 PM.
