Suffolk Tips Saint Joseph’s, 66-55

BOSTON, Mass. -- The Suffolk University Men's Basketball team defeated the Saint Joseph's College Monks, 66-55 in Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) action on Thursday evening at the Regan Gymnasium.

Three players finished the evening with double digit scoring totals for Suffolk who snap a five-game skid with the victory. Each home team was victorious as the two GNAC teams squared off on back to back nights with the Monks taking a 76-69 victory on Wednesday evening.

Sophomore Matt Duquette (Swampscott, Mass.) scored 11 of his team-high 16 points in the second half to help lead Suffolk past the Monks. Junior Jake Meister (Madison, N.J.) scored 10 of his game's 14 points in the first half as Suffolk took a 39-24 lead heading into the break.

The Monks would open the contest scoring the first eight points of the game, however Suffolk would outscore Saint Joseph's by a 26-6 margin over the final eight minutes of the first half. Suffolk would hold the GNAC's leading three-point shooting team to just 1-for-11 in the opening period to take a 39-24 lead into the break.

Suffolk would manage to hold a steady lead throughout the second half. Senior Steve Simonds (Steep Falls, Maine) would cut the Monks' deficit down to seven points with a little over a minute and a half remaining in regulation. Simonds would lead all scorers with 19 points as the senior guard recorded a double-double also posting 10 rebounds in the contest.

Senior Zach Blodgett (Glenburn, Maine) also finished the game with a double-double as he added 10 points along with 10 rebounds.

Junior Brandon Barboza (Riverside, R.I.) scored 13 points for Suffolk who move to an 8-13 overall record and 5-9 mark in GNAC play.

Both teams will be back in home conference action on Saturday afternoon.

Saint Joseph's will host Emmanuel College at 3:00pm, while Suffolk welcomes Mount Ida College for a 3:00pm tip-off.
