WINTHROP, Mass. – No. 7 nationally ranked Albertus Magnus College held off Anna Maria College, 75-68, on the road Saturday afternoon to achieve a perfect 18-0 record in conference play. The Falcons now get set to open the 2015 GNAC Men's Basketball Tournament as the conference's top seed.
The Falcons, who are 24-1 overall on the season and ranked ninth in the latest NCAA Division III Northeast regional rankings, earned their 22nd straight victory with Saturday's win and will host eighth-seeded Suffolk University (8-17, 5-13 GNAC) on Tuesday in the GNAC quarterfinals. The game will tip off at 7:00 p.m. in New Haven, Conn.
Johnson & Wales University (19-5, 15-3 GNAC) will serve as the No. 2 seed in the upcoming conference tournament. The Wildcats, who suffered two of their three GNAC losses by a combined five points to Albertus Magnus, will host seventh-seeded Mount Ida College (8-17, 6-12 GNAC) on Tuesday at 7:30 p.m. Mount Ida cemented its spot in the postseason field with a crucial 82-76 home victory over Rivier University on Saturday in the regular-season finale.
Anna Maria (14-11, 12-6 GNAC) earned the third seed in next week's GNAC Tournament, as the AMCATS get set to host sixth-seeded Emmanuel College (9-15, 7-11 GNAC) on Tuesday night at 7:00 p.m. Anna Maria won nine straight at one point in January and overall has won 12 of its last 16.
In the remaining matchup on Tuesday, fifth-seeded Lasell College (10-15, 9-9 GNAC) will travel to fourth-seeded Saint Joseph's College of Maine (12-13, 10-8 GNAC) for a 7:00 p.m. tip. Lasell defeated Saint Joseph's earlier this week with a 77-60 win at home on Tuesday, although the Monks topped the Lasers, 75-63, back in their December 2 matchup.
The 2015 GNAC Tournament semifinals are slated for Thursday evening, with the conference title game scheduled for Saturday.
