Monks Rally Late, Defeat Mariners in Opener, 73-71

STANDISH, Maine – Saint Joseph's College (1-0) rallied from an 11-point deficit to defeat Maine Maritime Academy (0-1), 73-71, in non-conference men's basketball action at the Harold Alfond Center on Tuesday evening. The contest was the 2016-17 season-opener for both teams.

HOW IT HAPPENED

Trailing 62-51 with 9:33 remaining after the Mariners connected on their seventh three-pointer in nine attempts in the second half, the Monks methodically chipped away at the deficit to the tune of a 16-4 run, which was capped with a pair of Darian Berry (Rochester, N.H.) free throws to lift the hosts to a 67-66 edge with 2:41 left. Berry drained a deep three-pointer on the Monks' following possession and freshman Mario Nery (Bronx, N.Y.) converted a fast break layup after sophomore Marc Corey (Londonderry, N.H.) picked off a pass, a play that all but clinched the victory.

  • Corey led the Monks with 16 points while recording four rebounds and four assists
  • Junior Aaron Hall (Haverhill, Mass.) contributed 12 points off a 5-6 shooting effort with 10 points coming in the first half

  • Nery netted eight points and was 4-4 from the line in his collegiate debut
