STANDISH, Maine - The National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC) has announced the 2016-17 NABC Honors Court, recognizing those men's collegiate basketball student-athletes who excelled in academics during the past season, and a pair of Saint Joseph's College players have earned the award.
Senior guard John Crawley (Fitchburg, Mass.) and junior forward Quinn Richardson-Newton (Saco, Maine) are among the hundreds of players – from all levels of collegiate basketball – to have earned the honor for their performance in the classroom.
Crawley, who graduated from Saint Joseph's with a degree in Finance last May, averaged 7.4 points and 3.3 rebounds per game as a key reserve for the Monks last winter. He ranked second on the team in three-pointers made (33) and shot 85.3% (29-34) from the free-throw line during his senior season.
Richardson-Newton, an Exercise Science major, averaged 9.5 points and a team-high 5.7 rebounds per game during his junior campaign. The three-year starter shot 42.3% (91-215) from the floor and 74.2% (66-89) from the FT stripe while starting all 26 contests last winter.
The NABC Honors Court recognizes the talents and gifts that these men possess off the court and the hard work they exhibit in the classroom. In order to be named to the Honors Court, a student-athlete must meet a high standard of academic criteria. The qualifications are as follows:
1. Academically a junior or senior and a varsity player.
2. Cumulative grade point average (GPA) of 3.2 or higher at the conclusion of the 2016-17 academic year.
3. Students must have matriculated at least one year at their current institution.
4. Member of a NCAA Division I, II, III, or NAIA Division I or II institution with an NABC member coach.
