STANDISH, Maine – Weekly accolades have been released and Saint Joseph's College sophomore Jack Casale (Portland, Maine/Cheverus) has garnered Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) Player of the Week and Maine Men's Basketball Coaches & Writers Association (MMBCWA) Co-Player of the Week accolades.
In a 2-0 week, Casale averaged 22.0 points, 9.5 rebounds and 3.0 assists while shooting 60.7% (17-28) overall and 64.3% (9-14) from beyond the arc to help the Monks extend their winning streak to six games. He was a stellar 11-of-13, including 6-of-6 from three, en route to scoring 28 points with six boards and four assists in a 104-78 victory over Maine Maritime on Tuesday. He added 16 points and 13 rebounds in a 78-74 win at Husson on Saturday.
Through nine games, Casale is averaging 24.0 points, 9.1 rebounds and 3.9 assists per contest while shooting 50.3% (74-147) from the field, 52.1% (38-73) from three-point distance, and 73.2% (30-41) from the free-throw line. He currently leads the conference in scoring average, three-pointers made, and defensive rebounds (73) and is second in points (216), and fourth in minutes per game (34.2) and total rebounds (82).
Casale shares the MMBCWA Player of the Week honor with Bowdoin College junior guard David Reynolds (Raleigh, N.C.), who averaged 23.7 points while shooting 56% from the floor in a 3-0 week for the Polar Bears.
For Casale, the MMBCWA honor is his third this season and the GNAC Player of the Week accolade is the first of his collegiate career.
In the weekly coaches poll, Saint Joseph's is ranked second - according to a vote of Maine college head coaches - with 32 total points. With seven first-place votes and 38 total points, Colby is ranked first while Bowdoin is third (23 pts), Husson fourth (18), and UMaine-Farmington is fifth (4). Southern Maine and Maine Maritime also received votes.
Saint Joseph's (7-2) will host UMaine-Farmington on Thursday at 7:30 PM.
