STANDISH, Maine – Saint Joseph's College (16-7, 6-4 GNAC) set a new program record with 21 three-point field goals in a 97-78 victory over Norwich University (6-17, 0-9 GNAC) in Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) men's basketball action at the Harold Alfond Center on Saturday afternoon.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
The Monks started the game with four-consecutive three pointers en route to claiming a 12-2 advantage with 14:29 left in the first half. The Cadets managed to cut their deficit to 11 points (38-27) with 4:11 before the break, but St. Joe's closed out the opening half with a 16-2 run and held a 54-29 cushion at intermission.
Saint Joseph's shot 63.6% (14-22) from beyond the arc in the first half as five different players drilled at least one trifecta with the Monks netting all but 12 of their points from downtown in the opening 20 minutes.
Norwich – which outscored St. Joe's, 49-43, in the second half - climbed back to within 14 points late in the second stanza but would get no closer as the Cadets dropped their 12th-consecutive contest.
STATS OF THE GAME:
The Monks' held a 21-8 lead in three-pointers made and scored 24 points off 19 Norwich turnovers…The Cadets netted 12 points off 16 SJC turnovers.
RECORD BREAKER:
With 21 three-pointers made in today's win, the Monks surpassed the previous program record of 18 trifectas, which was accomplished twice: first against Mount Ida on February 20th, 2014 and more recently against Rivier on January 18th, 2017.
LEADERS – SAINT JOSEPH'S:
- Senior guard Darian Berry (Rochester, N.H.) notched a double-double with 30 points and 10 rebounds and was 7-for-10 from three-point distance
- Senior guard Jack Hostetler (Somers, Conn.) – making his first career start for the Monks – was 8-for-11 from downtown with 24 points, eight boards, and three assists
- Senior forward Marc Corey (Londonderry, N.H.) added 18 points, five caroms, and four assists
- Freshman Nicholas Curtis (Windham, Maine) came off the bench to score 11 points with three assists and three steals
LEADERS – NORWICH:
- Sophomore forward Christopher Bryant (Crestview, Fla.) was 10-for-11 from the floor with 22 points and nine rebounds
- Sophomore guard Jesse Davis (Woodinville, Wash.) added 18 points and three rebounds
- Sophomore swingman Kyle Booth (Northfield, Vt.) chipped in with 12 points and six boards
HISTORICALLY SPEAKING:
With the victory, Saint Joseph's is now 20-4 all-time versus Norwich University. The Monks' total of 97 points is the most scored by either team in the 24-game history of the series.
