2009 Men’s Lacrosse Team Awards Announced

STANDISH, ME - Saint Joseph's Men's Lacrosse Head Coach Mike Edgar has announced the 2009 Team Awards. Seven awards were given to nine members of this year's team, which posted a 4-13 record and made an appearance in the North Atlantic Conference Tournament as a first-year member of the league.

Freshman midfielder Jonathan Horgan (Hingham, MA) is the Monks' 2009 Most Valuable Player. Horgan led the Royal Blue with 45 goals, 17 assists, and 62 points - all new program single-season watermarks - and was honored by the NAC as Conference Rookie of the Week on three occasions this spring. Aside from his single-season records, Horgan also is in the SJC Men's Lacrosse record book for having tallied seven goals and nine points against Lyndon State College on April 11th.

The 2009 Most Improved Player Award goes to junior midfielder Andrew Moravick (Biddeford, ME). Moravick, who is also a member of the SJC Cross Country team, tied for the team lead with five caused turnovers this season and netted three goals with 30 groundballs in 17 games.

Freshman midfielder Paul Dolewa (Saco, ME) has been recognized as the 2009 Offensive Player of the Year. The first-year player finished the season second on the team in goals (31), assists (9), groundballs (57) and faceoff wins (38) in 2009. With 161 shots this spring, Dolewa owns both the single-season and career records at St. Joe's and ranked 5th in the NAC with 9.47 shots per game.

Junior defender Kyle Joseph (Oakland, ME) has been named as the Monks' Defensive Player of the Year for the second consecutive season. Joseph corralled nine groundballs in 10 games in 2009.

Senior co-captain Ryan Prescott '09 (Pittsfield, NH) was awarded the Heart and Hustle Award for the second year in a row. Prescott, who also was an elite runner for the SJC Cross Country team and played Club Ice Hockey for St. Joe's, enjoyed a tremendous final season in the Royal Blue with a team high 65 groundballs (a new single-season record for the Monks), 12 goals, two assists, and five caused turnovers.

Senior co-captain Matthew Campbell (Dedham, MA) is the 2009 recipient of the Harold Alfond Pride and Character Award. A defender for Coach Edgar's squad, Campbell gathered 13 groundballs and forced three turnovers in 17 games for the Monks this spring.

Ross Hardaway '11 (East Boston, MA), Nicholas Hannon '09 (Windham, ME) and Donald Gearan '12 (Gorham, ME) share the 2009 Coaches' Award. Hardaway tallied 14 groundballs and four caused turnovers in 17 games and Hannon played eight games in net with 47 saves for the Monks. Gearan, an attacker by trade, filled in capably as a netminder after an injury depleted the position's depth early in the season. In 12 appearances in goal, Gearan made 123 saves and posted a respectable 15.32 goals-against average.
