Eagles Stymie Monks, 14-5

BANGOR, ME – Husson University (2-4, 1-0 NAC) defeated Saint Joseph’s College (3-4, 0-1 NAC), 14-5, in a North Atlantic Conference Men’s Lacrosse opener at Husson’s Boucher field on Saturday afternoon. Monks attacker Dylan Chase ’13 (West Newbury, MA) scored four goals and goalkeeper Christopher Driscoll ’13 (Saco, ME) made 18 saves in the losing effort.

Ben Landry ’12 (Lewiston, ME) led the Eagles with six goals and Nick Brown ’12 (Sabattus, ME) notched three goals with an assist and six groundballs. Husson keeper John Hooper ’13 (Wakefield, RI) made six stops in 25:36 of play and Alex Behzad ’13 (Stamford, CT) recorded five saves in 34:24 between the pipes.

The Eagles controlled the game in the early going and led 4-0 after Landry netted his second tally of the game at the 4:10 mark off a Anthony Diaz ’12 (Brunswick, ME) pass. Chase scored a man-down goal, off a pass from Spencer Hunt ’13 (Jeffersonville, VT), with 15 seconds left in the first quarter to put the Monks on the board.

St. Joe’s opened the second stanza with a pair of man-up goals from Chase and cut the deficit to 5-3 with 9:34 left in the period. Husson responded with four unanswered scores, including two by Landry, before Kody Peckham ’11 (West Gardiner, ME) netted the Monks’ third man-up goal of the quarter to make it a 9-4 contest heading into the break.

Chase scored his fourth goal of the game 59 seconds into the third quarter to make it a four-goal game, but the Eagles proceeded to keep the Monks off the board for the remainder of play while scoring five times to make the final score 14-5, Husson.

SJC defenseman Albert Comins ’13 (Newburyport, MA) continues to play well for the Monks and registered nine groundballs and eight caused turnovers, both game and career highs, in the losing effort. His caused turnover total also ranks as a new program single-game record.

Elliot LaMarre ’11 (Raymond, ME) won 11 face-offs and corralled eight groundballs and Driscoll managed to collect seven groundballs while manning the net for St. Joe’s.

Husson held an advantage in shots (47-27) and turnovers (36-46), but Saint Joseph’s won the battle in groundballs (48-43), face-offs (12-10) and clears (22-18) in the loss. The teams combined for 35 penalties for a total of 17:30 penalty minutes. The Monks were called for 14 infractions and the Eagles committed 21 violations.

St. Joe’s will host NAC opponent Green Mountain College on Saturday, April 3rd at 1:00 PM, while Husson returns to action on Tuesday when the Eagles take on Maine Maritime in Castine, ME at 3:00 PM in a conference contest.
