Monks Claw Past Badgers, 11-9

JOHNSON, VT – St. Joe's (6-6, 2-3 NAC) defeated Johnson State (1-7, 1-5 NAC), 11-9, in a North Atlantic Conference Men's Lacrosse contest on Sunday afternoon. Kody Peckham '11 (West Gardiner, ME) tallied three goals and two assists in the Monks' victory.

Paul Dolewa '12 (Saco, ME) added two goals and three assists, while Tookie Amosun '11 (Gardiner, ME) and Spencer Hunt '13 (Jeffersonville, VT) both scored twice and Dylan Chase '13 (West Newbury, MA) chipped in with a goal and an assist in the triumph. Monks goalkeeper Marco Stefano '12 (Steep Falls, ME) recorded 12 saves in 48:45 minutes between the pipes.

The Badgers jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first 3:20 of play, as Alex Petti '11 (East Greenwich, RI) scored twice and Billy Noyes '10 (Boston, MA) added another to lift their team to an early lead.

The Monks retaliated with seven unanswered markers, including two man-up goals by Peckham, over the next 16 minutes of play to take a 7-3 lead. The Badgers outscored the visitors, 3-1, over the final 10:23 of the second quarter to cut the SJC cushion to 6-8 heading into intermission.

Erik Tillberg '10 (Randolph, VT), who tallied two goals in the first half, made it a one-goal game with a marker 4:34 into the third quarter, which featured just two scores. Hunt netted the other goal of the third, off a Chase pass, at the 4:31 mark to provide the Monks with a 9-7 cushion.

Noyes netted his third goal of the game, a man-down marker at the 13:12 mark of the fourth quarter, to cut the Johnson State deficit back to one goal, 9-8. The Monks responded with back-to-back goals from Hunt and Dolewa over the next three minutes to capture a three-goal cushion. Steve Noyes '10 (Barre, VT) scored the game's final goal for the Badgers with 7:20 remaining.

For the Monks, Dolewa and Albert Comins '13 (Newbury, MA) gathered a game-high nine groundballs and Elliot LaMarre '11 (Raymond, ME) won 13 of 20 face-off attempts in the conference conquest.

Branden Sawyer '10 (East Greenwich, VT) recorded eight saves in the cage for the Badgers and Maxwell Connolly '13 (Rollinsford, NH) collected eight groundballs in the losing effort.

St. Joe's held an advantage in saves (14-8), face-off wins (15-7) and groundballs (53-51), while Johnson State held an edge in shots (44-35) in the NAC contest.

St. Joe's will host Maine-Farmington on Wednesday at 4:00 PM, while the Badgers will host Lyndon State in a conference game on Tuesday at 4:00 PM.
