Monks Sail Past Mariners, 18-7

STANDISH, ME – Saint Joseph's (10-7, 5-4 NAC) defeated Mitchell College (2-10), 18-7, in a non-conference men's lacrosse contest at Westerlea Way Field on Wednesday afternoon. Spencer Hunt '13 (Jeffersonville, VT) scored four goals and added five assists in the SJC triumph.

Early in the second half, Blake Edwards '11 (Glide, OR) and Elliot LaMarre '11 (Raymond, ME) scored goals just four seconds apart to lift the hosts to an 8-2 lead. The four-second span ties the NCAA DIII Men's Lacrosse record for fastest consecutive goals scored by the same team.

Luke LaFreniere '10 (Alton, NH) notched four goals and five groundballs and LaMarre tallied four goals with six groundballs and won 62.5% (10-16) of his face-off attempts for the Monks. SJC keeper Marco Stefano '12 (Steep Falls, ME) made 12 saves and improves to 5-2 on the season.

Aharon Wall '12 (Hyde Park, MA), Adam Grillo '12 (Waterford, CT) and Steven Barnett '11 (Clinton, CT) all scored two goals for Mitchell while Mariners keeper Joseph Nott '12 (Waterford, CT) made 14 stops between the pipes.

Prior to the start of the game, the Monks' five seniors – LaFreniere, Joe Vining (Poland, ME), Kyle Joseph (Oakland, ME), Andrew Moravick (Biddeford, ME) and Stephen Lucafo (Raymond, NH) – were honored with a ceremony in recognition of their contributions to the program. The quintet has helped Saint Joseph's post a 15-29 record as important members of the three-year varsity program.

Hunt opened the game scoring with an unassisted marker 2:10 after the opening whistle and Wall tied the game 1:23 later.

With a goal at the 11:12 mark, LaFreniere sparked a 5-0 SJC surge that allowed the Monks to secure a 6-1 cushion after the first 15 minutes of play. Grillo scored a man-up marker to start the second-quarter scoring at the 14:17 mark, but the record-tying goals followed to lift St. Joe's to an 8-2 advantage.

St. Joe's led 9-4 heading into the second half and the teams traded goals for the first 12 minutes of the third quarter, as the Monks held a 12-7 lead after Barnett netted his second goal of the game with 3:28 left in the third stanza. Tookie Amosun '11 (Gardiner, ME) put the Monks up by six with 1:02 remaining in the third and Saint Joseph's scored five unanswered goals in the fourth quarter en route to earning the 18-7 victory.

Vining scored the game's final goal, the first marker of his career, with one minute remaining.

Saint Joseph's held the advantage in shots (51-28), groundballs (59-34), face-offs (20-9) and clear rate (83%-67%) in the victory.

St. Joe's has earned the #5 seed in the NAC Tournament and will travel to Castine, Maine on Saturday for a NAC Quarterfinal contest against #4 Maine Maritime, which is slated to begin at 3:00 PM. The loss signals the end of the 2010 campaign for the Mariners.
