2010 Men's Lacrosse Team Awards Announced

STANDISH, ME – The Saint Joseph's Men's Lacrosse team awards have been announced for the 2010 season. Eight awards were given and 10 individuals were honored for their efforts.

Most Valuable Player: Freshman goalkeeper Christopher Driscoll (Saco, ME)

Driscoll enjoyed a fine season as a rookie netminder and was a key component in the Monks' 10-win season. He set new program single-season records for goalkeeper games (13), minutes (694), saves (148), save percentage (.571), wins (5) and shots faced (413) and also broke the single-game record for saves with 23 stops against Lyndon State on April 25th. He ranked third in the NAC in goals-against average and fifth in save percentage as a first-year player.

Offensive Player of the Year: Freshman attacker Spencer Hunt (Jeffersonville, VT)

Hunt, the 2010 NAC Co-Rookie of the Year, led the Monks in all offensive categories and set new single-season marks for assists (34), points (76), game-winners (4) and shots on goal (81) as a first-year player while his 2010 goal total (42) ranks second in the team's three-year history. Hunt also notched single-game records for goals (9), assists (8), points (14) and shots (22) as a rookie and tallied at least one point in 16 of the team's 17 contests. He ranked second in the NAC in assists per game (2.0), fourth in points per game (4.47) and sixth in goals per game (2.47).

Defensive Player of the Year: Freshman defender Albert Comins (Newburyport, MA)

Comins, a Second Team All-NAC selection in 2010, was a major factor in the Monks' improved defensive efforts as a rookie. He led the conference with a program-record 36 caused turnovers and was second on the team with 77 ground balls in 2010. While patrolling on defense, Comins helped the Royal Blue cut its 2009 goals against average nearly in half, as the 2010 club notched a 9.12 GAA versus the 17.21 mark posted the previous season.

Alfond Pride & Character Award: Senior midfielder Luke LaFreniere (Alton, NH)

LaFreniere embodies what it is to be an NCAA DIII athlete. A two-time NAC All-Academic honoree, LaFreniere excelled on and off the athletic field and contributed with 19 goals and 31 ground balls as a third-year midfielder. He capped his career as the team's all-time leader in games played (46) and is currently ranked fifth in both career goals (33) and ground balls (86) and sixth in points (44).

Heart and Hustle Award: Senior defender Andrew Moravick (Biddeford, ME)

Moravick, one of just five SJC players to appear in all 18 contests, made 16 starts and registered career highs with 39 ground balls and 14 caused turnovers in 2010. Also a two-time North Atlantic Conference All-Academic Team honoree, Moravick exhibited a strong work ethic in the arena and the classroom during his time at Saint Joseph's. This two-sport athlete (cross country), who also helped jumpstart a club track team on campus, will surely be successful beyond college.

Most Improved: Junior attacker Blake Edwards (Glide, OR)

Edwards, a 2010 NAC All-Academic honoree as a Biology/Pre-Med major, has proven to be a consistent contributor for the Monks in his three seasons. A former football standout who did not play lacrosse in high school, Edwards tallied five goals, seven assists, 34 ground balls and five caused turnovers as a junior and has 19 goals in his SJC career.

Unsung Hero Award: Junior midfielder Elliot LaMarre (Raymond, ME)

LaMarre continues to be one of the top face-off specialists in the conference, if not the region, and set SJC single-season records with 177 face-off wins and 91 ground balls in 2010. His 61.5% success rate in the circle ranked third in the NAC and 22nd in the country, while his ground ball per game (5.35) ranked 7th in the conference. LaMarre, a 2010 team tri-captain, heads into his senior season as the program's all-time leader in shot on goal percentage (.649), ground balls (180), face-off wins (350) and face-off percentage (.573).

Coaches' Award: Seniors Kyle Joseph (Oakland, ME), Stephen Lucafo (Raymond, NH) & Joe Vining (Poland, ME)

This trio of seniors has helped lay the groundwork for the future of the Saint Joseph's Men's Lacrosse program, which certainly looks bright. The three players combined for 52 ground balls and 16 caused turnovers in 2010, but their influence on the team cannot be described using statistics. On and off the field, they represented the lacrosse program well and will be missed in future seasons.

The 2010 Saint Joseph's College Men's Lacrosse team, 10-8 overall and 5-4 in NAC play, enjoyed a breakout season last spring while earning single-season team records for wins and winning percentage (.556).
