PORTLAND, ME – Junior attacker Jonathan Horgan (Hingham, MA) scored three goals and tied a program record with eight assists in a 15-1 Saint Joseph's (4-3) victory over University of Maine-Farmington (0-1) on Wednesday evening.
The Monks held a slim 1-0 advantage after the first 15 minutes of play but broke out with eight unanswered goals in the second quarter to take a 9-0 lead into halftime. St. Joe's closed out the game with three man-up goals in the final five minutes of play and tallied five man advantage markers in the victory.
For Saint Joseph's, Spencer Hunt '13 (Jeffersonville, VT) scored a game-high five goals, Paul Dolewa '12 (Saco, ME) added three goals and six ground balls, Albert Comins '13 (Newbury, MA) contributed five caused turnovers, and Elliot LaMarre '11 (Raymond, ME) won 11 of 13 face-off attempts with eight ground balls.
With five points in tonight's triumph, Hunt became the first player in Saint Joseph's men's lacrosse history to reach the 100-point plateau. Hunt, who scored 76 points (42 goals, 34 assists) as a freshman, has 24 points through seven games this spring. The 2010 NAC Co-Rookie of the Year has netted 62 goals and 38 assists in 24 career contests.
Jake Ricciardi '14 (Sharon, MA), Johnny Magwood '14 (Ellicott City, MD) and Benson Pasquarello '12 (Kennebunk, ME) also found the back of the cage in the Saint Joseph's triumph.
SJC keeper Christopher Driscoll '13 (Saco, ME) recorded one save in 30 minutes of shutout duty while backup netminder Colin Finn '14 (North Easton, MA) recorded two saves in the second half.
Tennessee Peters '14 (Scarborough, ME) scored the Beavers' only goal, a man-up score at the 5:27 mark of the third quarter. Nate Webb '13 (Westford, MA) tallied a team-high six ground balls and UMF keeper Ben Altmaier '13 (Farmington, ME) recorded 14 saves in a losing effort.
Saint Joseph's held large advantages in shots (66-14), ground balls (78-38) and face-off wins (15-5) in the win.
St. Joe's has netted 11 man-up goals in the last two games and have 19 man advantage scores through seven games this season, a total that is five shy of breaking the program single-season record.
Both teams will play non-conference contests at 1:00 PM on the road this Saturday. The Monks take on Husson while Maine-Farmington faces Rivier College that day.
