Monks Claw Past Lions, 9-2

PORTLAND, ME – Saint Joseph's (9-6, 5-4 GNAC) defeated Emerson College (1-11, 1-5 GNAC), 9-2, in a Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) contest at Deering Memorial Stadium on Tuesday evening. Jonathan Horgan '12 (Hingham, MA) Spencer Hunt '13 (Jeffersonville, VT) tallied two goals and two assists apiece in the Monks' triumph.

The conference tilt stood at a 1-1 deadlock until Zachary Chaisson '14 (Concord, NH) netted an unassisted goal with one second on the first quarter clock. The marker was the first of six unanswered tallies that saw the Monks secure a 7-1 lead heading into the third stanza.

Dan Gold '12 (Randolph, NJ) scored for the Lions at the 10:32 mark of the third quarter to make it 7-2 game, but Tookie Amosun '11 (Gardiner, ME) netted goals less than two minutes apart to propel the Royal Blue to a 9-2 cushion with 5:25 left in the third.

SJC netminder Christopher Driscoll '13 (Saco, ME) recorded two saves to collect the victory. Backup keeper Colin Finn '14 (North Easton, MA) stopped both shots he faced in 15 minutes of mop-up duty.

Emerson goalie Zoe Fisk '13 (Gardiner, ME) made 10 saves in a losing effort.

Saint Joseph's held advantages in shots (54-22), ground balls (34-13) and face-off wins (8-5) on the night. Neither team converted a man-up opportunity, as Emerson was 0-8 and St. Joe's went 0-3 in man-advantage situations.

The Monks have now won four consecutive games, all against conference foes, for the first time in the four-year history of the program. St. Joe's won three straight on two occasions last spring.

With the win, St. Joe's improves to 2-1 in the history of the series with Emerson College. The Monks defeated the Lions by a 16-2 margin in 2010.

Saint Joseph's will host GNAC-rival Norwich University at Westerlea Way Field in the 2011 regular season finale on Saturday at 1:00 PM. Emerson is slated to host Daniel Webster College in a conference tilt at Rotch Field on Saturday at 12:30 PM.
