Vikings Sail Past Monks, 11-4

SALEM, MA - Salem State jumped out to a 6-0 halftime lead and cruised to an 11-4 victory over Saint Joseph's College at Alumni Field on Tuesday evening.

Ryan Gendreau (Danvers, MA) got Salem State going with two quick scores, the first at the 11:58 mark and the second at 7:19 of the first that put the Vikings up 2-0. Nate Arminio (Reston, VA) added another goal off a feed from Ian Abrahamson (Billerica, MA) and the Vikings ended the first with a 3-0 lead.

Corey Davis (Wakefield, MA) opened up a four-goal lead for Salem State early in the second before A.J. Robertson (Ipswich, MA) connected on a  man-up advantage from Gendreau to make the score 5-0. Arminio continued his torrid scoring pace with his 11th goal in the past three games to give the Vikings a comfortable six-goal lead at halftime.

Salem State outshot St. Joseph's 7-1 in the first period and held a 33-26 shots advantage for the game.

The Monks finally got on the board early in the third when Andrew Sullivan (Rochester, NH) found the back of the net to make the score 6-1. However, the Vikings responded with two quick scores by Matt Whited (Falmouth, MA) and a third goal by Arminio to increase the lead to 8-1.

Paul Dolewa (Saco, ME) scored the Monk's second goal on an assist from Max Meserve (Kennebunk, ME) late in the third before Salem State's Davis added his second score of the game to make the score 9-2.

Arminio, who finished with four goals, and Robertson, two goals, two assists, each added fourth period scores for the Vikings. Jonathan Horgan (Hingham, MA) and Kody Peckham (West Gardiner, ME) closed the scoring for the Monks with a goal each in the final frame.

Salem State improves to 3-4 on the year while St. Joseph's slips to 1-5. 

Frank Lento (Salem, MA) has three assist for the Vikings while Gendreau finished with two goals and two assists. Horgan had a goal and an assist and Meserve added two assists for the Monks.

Christopher Driscoll (Saco, ME) stopped 12 shots in the loss and Kyle Tuneburg (Beverly, MA), who earned the win, made three saves before being replaced by Nick Romeo (Salem, MA) and Dylan Svenson (Billerica, MA), who finished up in net.

Salem State goes to Mass Maritime for a 7:00 PM game next Wednesday evening while the Monks host UMaine-Farmington Thursday at 7:00 PM.
