Monks Handle Wildcats, 10-2

PROVIDENCE, RI – Saint Joseph's College (5-6, 4-4 GNAC) topped Johnson & Wales University (2-12, 0-8 GNAC), 10-2, in Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) men's lacrosse action on Saturday afternoon.

Junior Brandon Boutin (Hackettstown, N.J.) tallied a hat trick for Saint Joseph's while fellow junior Mark Meserve (Kennebunk, Maine) had two goals and two assists in the win for the Monks.

Junior Damian Bandereck (Topsfield, Mass.) put Johnson & Wales on the board first when he tallied an unassisted goal with 10:09 left in the first quarter.  The visiting Monks responded with a 7-0 run, including a pair of goals by junior Andrew Sullivan (Rochester, N.H.) to take the 7-1 lead heading into halftime.

Boutin scored twice as part of a three-goal quarter for Saint Joseph's for the 10-1 lead after three quarters of play.  JWU sophomore Tyler Thompson (West Chester, Pa.) closed out the scoring for the day when he put in a pass from freshman Brian Hillenbrand (Portsmouth, R.I.), but it wouldn't be enough as Saint Joseph's held on for the 10-2 victory.

Junior Jack Pettine (Foxboro, Mass.) made eight stops in net for JWU with senior Mike Russo (Chelmsford, Mass.) recording 12 saves in the setback.  Junior Jason Yasenchock (Rochester, N.H.) and fellow junior Ethan Rettew (Ephrata, Pa.) combined for nine saves in the win for Saint Joseph's.

The Monks return to the turf on Wednesday when the team hosts Emmanuel College in a 7:30 PM conference contest at Deering Memorial Stadium. Johnson & Wales hosts Albertus Magnus College at 7:00 PM on Wednesday.
