Buccaneers Push Past Monks in Season-Opener, 6-2

BUZZARDS BAY, Mass. – Massachusetts Maritime Academy (1-0) defeated Saint Joseph's College (0-1), 6-2, in a non-conference men's lacrosse contest on in the season-opener for both programs on Tuesday evening. Senior goalie Ethan Rettew (Ephrata, Pa.) made a career-high 19 saves in the losing bid.

Senior Dylan Freudenberg (Islip, N.Y.) staked the host Buccaneers to the early lead by converting a feed from sophomore Ryan McNeill (Burlington, Mass.) with 2:21 remaining in the opening quarter, and freshman Kyle Richardson (West Newbury, Mass.) extended that margin to 2-0 at the break with a man-down marker that came with 9:49 remaining in the half. 

Senior Brad Loomis (Saunderstown, R.I.) sliced the visiting Monks' deficit in half with his first collegiate goal when he converted a pass from fellow senior Dalton Eldridge (South Gardiner, Maine) with 2:26 to play in the third stanza, but Massachusetts Maritime broke things open with four unanswered goals in the fourth quarter, including an even strength tally by sophomore Steven Anderson (Crownsville, Md.) and a man-up goal off the stick of junior Anthony Kurylak (Exeter, N.H.) in the opening 4:41 of the frame, to spark the hosts' run.

Patrick Kearney (Scituate, Mass.) and junior Sean Staples (Norwell, Mass.) added scores in the final 5:10 of action for the Buccaneers, who also received assists off the sticks of sophomore Sam Jarvis (Laurel Springs, N.J.) and freshman John Mahoney (Hanover, Mass.).  Freshman Tom Lisiecki (South Boston, Mass.) netted Saint Joseph's other goal of the contest with 1:21 remaining, as Eldridge provided the assist on both of the Monks' markers.

Rettew made eight of his 19 stops in the third quarter alone and added six ground balls and three caused turnovers, also a career-best, on the evening.

Junior James Klose (Ellicott City, Md.) picked up his first career victory in his first collegiate start in net for Massachusetts Maritime, as he made five saves in the second half alone.

Eldridge led the Monks with seven shots while freshman Liam Skinner (Irving, Texas) added six ground balls and freshman midi Cam Zaborowski (Littleton, Mass.) added three ground balls and won five of nine face-off attempts in the setback.

Overall, the Buccaneers held advantages in shots (35-26) and ground balls (34-24) in what was the first-ever match-up between the New England Region counterparts.

Both teams resume play on Thursday, when Saint Joseph's travels to University of New England for a 4:00 PM non-conference match-up and Massachusetts Maritime hosts Albertus Magnus College at 7:00 PM.
