STANDISH, Maine – Head Coach Bill Cosentino has announced the men's lacrosse recruiting class of 2021.
Cosentino, who recently completed his first season at the helm for the Monks, proved to be a tireless recruiter in his first cycle at Saint Joseph's and looks to bring in a group of 19 athletes when classes resume this fall. The 2021 class, which includes players from six different states, figures to infuse the Monks' roster with great talent and athleticism as well as depth at every position.
In his first season on the SJC sidelines, Cosentino guided the Monks to a 6-9 overall record with a 3-5 mark in Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) play. With the help of an upset victory over eventual GNAC semifinalist Johnson & Wales University, the Monks kept their postseason hopes alive, but the team's tourney aspirations were thwarted with a 14-9 loss at the hands of Mount Ida College in the season finale.
Although they fell short in their goal of advancing to the tournament, the future looks very bright for the Monks, who lose just one player – graduated senior Mark Lapierre – from a squad that showed marked improvement statistically across the board and finished 17th in the nation in man-down defense (.814).
The addition of the lighted turf field complex on campus, with construction due to be completed later this summer, will also be a huge factor for the Monks going forward.
"I'm very excited to welcome the 2021 class," adds Coach Cosentino. "Each of these young men represent some, if not all, of the qualities I look for in student-athletes: commitment, good character, leadership, strong work ethic, high lacrosse IQ, athleticism, strong skill set, and excellence in academics. These young men will help build upon the foundation that we started to create this past season, and they will no doubt help us climb to the top of the GNAC."
