STANDISH, Maine – Saint Joseph's College (2-4) cruised past Thomas College (0-1), 16-4, in a non-conference men's lacrosse contest at the SJC Athletics Complex on Tuesday evening.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
The Monks struck early, as senior Matt Donnell (Watertown, Mass.) netted the first men's lacrosse goal at the SJC Athletics Complex off a Luigi Grimaldi (Portland, Maine) feed just 55 seconds into the game, and controlled the pace of play throughout the contest.
St. Joe's held a 9-0 advantage at halftime and did not allow a goal until Thomas junior Colby Blondin (Colchester, Vt.) hit pay dirt with 3:03 remaining in the third quarter.
In the end, 11 different SJC players scored and 44 individuals earned playing time in the victory.
THE KEEPERS:
All four of the Monks' goalies saw time in goal, as Connor Trainor (Franklin, Mass.), Logan Skinner (Irving, Texas), Wyatt Porter (Pittsfield, Mass.), and Zachary Remillard (Manchester, N.H.) combined to stop five of the nine shots they faced in the triumph.
Thomas junior Connor Lamberton (Shohola, Pa.) turned away 18 shots in the losing effort.
TEAM STATS:
Saint Joseph's held advantages in shots (60-19), ground balls (56-30), and face-offs (16-7) and was 10-13 on clear attempts with 19 turnovers while Thomas was 10-27 on clear bids and committed 41 turnovers on the evening.
LEADERS – SAINT JOSEPH'S:
- Grimaldi scored three goals on eight shots
- Junior Michael Finn (Quincy, Mass.) tallied three goals and an assist with six ground balls and three caused turnovers
- Senior Joe O'Reilly (Suffern, N.Y.) added a goal and three assists with a pair of ground balls
- Freshman Shane Puleo (Nashua, N.H.) tacked on two goals and two caused turnovers
- Sophomore Shane Fors (Kalamazoo, Mich.) scooped up six ground balls and won 13 of 16 face-off attempts
- Senior Liam Skinner (Irving, Texas) registered five ground balls and three caused turnovers
- Junior Peter Wood (Gloucester, Mass.) and freshman Alexander Osmanski (Abington, Mass.) notched three caused turnovers apiece
LEADERS – THOMAS:
- Blondin scored three goals with an assist and five ground balls and was 5-16 on face-off attempts
- Junior Jacob Kendall (Lewiston, Maine) netted a goal with a pair of ground balls
- Junior Conner Blair (North Hartland, Vt.) chipped in with five ground balls and three caused turnovers
HISTORICALLY SPEAKING:
With the victory, Saint Joseph's improves to 7-2 in the history of the series with Thomas College and has now defeated the Terriers in seven-consecutive meetings dating back to the 2010 campaign.
