STANDISH, Maine – Saint Joseph's College (3-4) defeated University of Southern Maine (1-4), 10-6, in a non-conference men's lacrosse contest at the SJC Athletics Complex on Thursday evening.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

Southern Maine held an early lead after scoring goals on their first two shots of the game with Cam Thibault and Nate Delgiudice (Oakland, Maine) both hitting pay dirt in the opening three minutes of play. Saint Joseph's proceeded to rattle off four unanswered goals and held a 4-3 lead heading into the second quarter.

In the second stanza, the in-state rivals swapped scores with junior attack Michael Finn (Quincy, Mass.) netting his third goal of the game just nine seconds before the break  to lift the Monks to a 6-5 edge at halftime.

A turnover-riddled third frame featured just one goal, as senior attack Joe O'Reilly (Suffern, N.Y.) scored off a Finn feed to make it a 7-5 game at the 4:15 mark.

In the fourth frame, Saint Joseph's extended the advantage to 10-5 with three strikes in the first seven minutes, as freshman attack Glenn Dion (Pembroke, N.H.) netted a pair of tallies and junior midfielder Tyler Retalic (Framingham, Mass.) added an insurance goal with 8:30 remaining.

THE KEEPERS:

Saint Joseph's senior Connor Trainor (Franklin, Mass.) made eight saves with five ground balls in the victory while Southern Maine junior Zach Bessette (Readfield, Maine) turned away 11 shots with five ground balls in a losing effort.

TEAM STATS:

The Monks held a 43-34 advantage in shots while the Huskies posted the lead in ground balls (33-29) and face-off wins (15-5) on the evening. St. Joe's committed 24 turnovers and was 18-21 on clearing attempts and USM went 14-16 on clearing bids with 23 turnovers.

LEADERS – SAINT JOSEPH'S:

• Finn scored three goals with two assists and a pair of ground balls
• O'Reilly contributed three goals, two assists, and two ground balls
• Dion netted three goals with two ground balls
• Retalic added a goal and an assist
• Senior Liam Skinner (Irving, Texas) tallied six ground balls and seven caused turnovers
• Sophomore Shane Fors (Kalamazoo, Mich.) picked up four ground balls with five face-off wins

LEADERS – SOUTHERN MAINE:

• Thibault scored a pair of goals on seven shots
• Derek Davidson netted a goal and an assist with eight ground balls and was 13-16 on the face-off dot

HISTORICALLY SPEAKING:

With the victory, Saint Joseph's is now 2-8 all-time versus University of Southern Maine. The Monks' last victory over the Huskies, a 6-5 triumph, took place on March 7th, 2011.
