Saint Joseph's Defeats Maine Maritime, 15-4

CASTINE, Maine – Saint Joseph's College (4-4) sailed past Maine Maritime Academy (0-4), 15-4, in a non-conference men's lacrosse contest on Monday night.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

Junior Michael Finn (Quincy, Mass.) scored a pair of goals to help lift the Monks to a 4-0 lead after the first quarter and Saint Joseph's extended the lead to 6-1 heading into intermission.

St. Joe's netted five unanswered goals, including a pair from freshman Shane Puleo (Nashua, N.H.), in the third quarter to make it an 11-1 game through three frames. Puleo and Finn both struck again in the fourth to help launch the Monks to the 15-4 victory.

THE KEEPERS:

Saint Joseph's senior Connor Trainor (Franklin, Mass.) stopped five of the six shots he faced to pick up his fourth win of the season and freshman Logan Skinner (Irving, Texas) made three saves in 16:41 of mop-up duty.

Maine Maritime starter Isaiah Weston made seven saves and allowed 13 goals before giving way to Matthew Emery, who posted three saves in 11:23 of relief.

TEAM STATS:

The Monks held a 48-20 advantage in shots while the Mariners held the lead in ground balls (34-32) and face-off wins (12-11) on the evening. Saint Joseph's was successful on 16 of 20 clearing attempts and went 4-9 in man-up situations while Maine Maritime was 15-21 on clears and 0-2 in man-up scenarios.

LEADERS – SAINT JOSEPH'S:

  • Finn paced the Monks' offense with four goals and added an assist and four ground balls
  • Puleo netted three goals
  • Senior Matt Donnell (Watertown, Mass.) tacked on two goals and an assist
  • Senior Brendan Barrett (East Sandwich, Mass.) chipped in with a goal and an assist
  • Sophomore Shane Fors (Kalamazoo, Mich.) scored a goal with six ground balls and 11 face-off wins in 21 attempts
  • Junior Tyler Retalic (Framingham, Mass.) added a goal and four ground balls

LEADERS – MAINE MARITIME:

  • Orion Sargent scored a pair of goals
  • Zeke Tocci netted a goal with an assist
  • Mitchell Farley won 12 of 23 face-off attempts and picked up 10 ground balls
  • Alex Grant-Roy – the brother of former SJC baseball standout Ben Grant-Roy '10 – added five ground balls
  • William Evon contributed five ground balls and three caused turnovers

HISTORICALLY SPEAKING:

Tonight's victory is the Monks' first-ever over the Mariners, who had defeated St. Joe's in each of the previous four matchups between the in-state rivals. The last time these teams faced off, Maine Maritime toppled Saint Joseph's, 22-6, in a North Atlantic Conference (NAC) Tournament game on May 1st, 2010.

The Monks kick off Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) play Wednesday with a 4:00 PM contest at Lasell College, the 2017 GNAC Champion.
