STANDISH, Maine – Saint Joseph's College (7-7, 3-3 GNAC) soared past Albertus Magnus College (2-9, 0-6 GNAC), 17-6, in a Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) men's lacrosse contest at the SJC Athletics Complex on Saturday afternoon.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
Saint Joseph's kicked off play with 13 unanswered goals and held a game-high 14-score cushion (15-1) after senior Dalton Paquette (Merrimack, N.H.) closed out the third quarter with consecutive goals.
RECORD BREAKER:
Saint Joseph's junior Michael Finn (Quincy, Mass.) broke the program's all-time goals record when he netted the 112th marker of his career off a Shane Puleo (Nashua, N.H.) pass with 10:45 remaining in the second quarter. With the strike, his fourth of the contest, Finn surpasses Assistant Coach Jonathan Horgan '12, who scored 111 goals in 50 career games. Finn broke the team record in his 45th career contest.
THE KEEPERS:
Saint Joseph's split time in net, as senior Connor Trainor (Franklin, Mass.) made five saves in the opening 30 minutes and senior netminder Wyatt Porter (Pittsfield, Mass.) posted a pair of stops in the closing two quarters.
Albertus Magnus junior John Brunetti (West Haven, Conn.) made 10 saves in 28 minutes and senior Jack Kerner (Merrick, N.Y.) tallied 10 stops over 32 minutes.
TEAM STATS:
Saint Joseph's posted considerable advantages in shots (69-29) and ground balls (45-29) and both teams won 13 face-off attempts on the afternoon. The Monks were 5-10 in man-up situations and held the Falcons to a 0-10 performance in man-up scenarios.
LEADERS – SAINT JOSEPH'S:
- Finn finished the day with four goals on six shots
- Puleo scored a goal with five assists and two ground balls
- Senior Matt Donnell (Watertown, Mass.) scored two goals with two assists and a pair of ground balls
- Paquette, junior Tyler Retalic (Framingham, Mass.), and freshman Zack Hamilton (Pepperell, Mass.) netted two goals apiece
- Sophomore Shane Fors (Kalamazoo, Mich.) won 12 of 15 face-off attempts and picked up six ground balls
- Junior Peter Wood (Gloucester, Mass.) and freshman Alexander Osmanski (Abington, Mass.) scooped up four ground balls apiece
LEADERS – ALBERTUS MAGNUS:
- Freshman Jordan Garguilo (West Haven, Conn.) tallied three goals, three assists, and six ground balls
- Senior Brennan Moore (Meriden, Conn.) potted a pair of goals with an assist
- Freshman Jayme Toro (East Haven, Conn.) won 13 of 26 face-off bids and added five ground balls
SENIOR MOMENT:
Before the contest, Saint Joseph's held a brief ceremony to honor the Monks' 13 seniors: Trainor, Porter, Paquette, Donnell, Brendan Barrett (East Sandwich, Mass.), James Tiernan (Lebanon, Maine), Joe O'Reilly (Suffern, N.Y.), Tom Lisiecki (South Boston, Mass.), Cam Zaborowski (Littleton, Mass.), Liam Skinner (Irving, Texas), Zach Glanville (Portland, Maine), Devin Fitzpatrick (Malden, Mass.), and Jake Crawford (Westbrook, Maine). This group has helped solidify the program's presence in the conference and will be missed going forward.
HISTORICALLY SPEAKING:
With the victory, Saint Joseph's remains undefeated (5-0) all-time versus Albertus Magnus College. The Monks now have the most victories in a season since the 2013 team, led by former Head Coach Mike Edgar, went 7-10 overall.
