STANDISH, Maine – Head Coach Bill Cosentino has released the men's lacrosse recruiting Class of 2022.
Cosentino, who will be in his third year on the SJC sideline when the 2019 season begins next March, is bringing in another bumper crop of athletes into the fold. His second recruiting class - which consists of 15 players from five different states with three attacks, two defenders, two goalies, and eight midfielders – figures to replenish a roster that lost 12 players to graduation this spring.
Reloading the ranks will be no small task, as among the departed seniors are three core players from a defense that led the Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) in caused turnovers (190) and man-down defense (.783) in 2018: goalkeeper Connor Trainor and defenders Liam Skinner and Tom Lisiecki. All three players garnered 2018 All-Conference honors and were four-year starters.
Matt Donnell, who ranked second on the team with 36 points (19 goals, 17 assists), and Brendan Barrett (the Monks' all-time assists leader (78)), both team captains, will be challenging to replace as well.
Last spring, Saint Joseph's posted a 10-9 overall record with 5-4 mark in conference play en route to earning the #4 seed in the GNAC Tournament. Making their first postseason appearance since 2014, the Monks defeated fifth-seeded Rivier University, 11-10, in a conference quarterfinal at home on April 28th before falling to top-seeded Norwich University, 17-8, on the road four days later.
The 2018 Monks established new team records in shots (803), shots on goal (464) and man-up goals (47) and posted the third winning-season – and first since 2011 – in program history
"I'm thrilled to welcome our incoming lacrosse players for the 2018-2019 school year," adds Cosentino. "The group as a whole is very strong, consisting of 2018 graduates who were All-State players, captains, and major role players for their high school teams. In addition, we welcome in a few transfers who really bring some experience to this new group of student-athletes. I believe many of these young men can push to be major role players for our program next season."
