Finn Nets Seven in Runaway Win Over Southern Maine

GORHAM, Maine – Senior attack Michael Finn (Quincy, Mass.) scored seven goals to help launch Saint Joseph's College (9-2) past University of Southern Maine (3-4), 15-7, in a non-conference men's lacrosse contest on Monday afternoon.

The victory extends the Monks' winning streak to a program-best eight games.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

The Huskies held a 4-3 lead after the first quarter and the rivalry matchup stood at a 6-6 stalemate heading into intermission. Finn put the Monks on top to stay with a pair of strikes in the opening five minutes of the third period as the visitors headed into the final frame with a 9-7 edge.

The fourth quarter was all St. Joe's however, as the Royal Blue netted six unanswered goals to add up to the 15-7 final score. Finn played a hand in five of the six tallies with three goals and a pair of assists in the closing stanza.

THE KEEPERS:

SJC sophomore netminder Logan Skinner (Irving, Texas) turned away 11 of the 18 shots he faced to improve to 9-1 on the season while USM freshman Alex Bonin (South Berwick, Maine) posted 12 saves in the losing effort.

TEAM STATS:

Saint Joseph's posted advantages in shots (45-36), shots on goal (25-23), and face-off wins (13-12) while Southern Maine held a 35-25 lead in ground balls on the afternoon.

LEADERS – SAINT JOSEPH'S:

  • Finn scored a career-high nine points with seven goals and two assists and added a pair of ground balls and two caused turnovers
  • Sophomore Brendan Martin (Nashua, N.H.) netted three goals on five shots
  • Senior Tyler Retalic (Framingham, Mass.) scored two goals
  • Sophomore Zack Hamilton (Pepperell, Mass.) added a pair of tallies
  • Sophomore Alex Osmanski (Abington, Mass.) picked up a game-high eight ground balls

LEADERS – SOUTHERN MAINE:

  • Senior Paul Leonardo (Groton, Mass.) scored a goal with two assists
  • Freshman Nick James (Portland, Maine) added a goal and an assist with three ground balls
  • Sophomore Steve Gilbert (Litchfield, Maine) chipped in with a goal and five ground balls and was 10-21 on face-off attempts
  • Junior Bryce Randall (Portland, Maine) netted a goal and an assist

HISTORICALLY SPEAKING:

With the victory Saint Joseph's is now 3-8 all-time versus University of Southern Maine and has now defeated the Huskies in consecutive meetings for the first time in the history of the matchup. SJC defeated USM by a 10-6 score at the SJC Athletics Complex last spring.
