NORTHFIELD, VT - Top-seeded Norwich University
(17-2-1, 8-0-1 GNAC) defeated Saint Joseph's (12-6-3, 6-2-1), 2-1,
in a hard-fought GNAC Championship match on Saturday afternoon.
Doug MacCallum '10 (Hingham, MA)
netted his 15th goal of the season for the Monks in the losing
effort. Will Pike '10 (Gorham, ME),
Lane Hubacz '09 (Mapleville, RI)
and MacCallum were all named to the All-Tournament
Team.
For the Cadets, Kyle Przekaza and Ryan Boyton tallied goals, and
Charles Maxwell stopped two of the three shots he faced.
Norwich will now advance to play in the NCAA Championship while the
Monks will wait to see if the program's first-ever ECAC
Championship Tournament berth is in the cards.
Przekaza put Norwich on top 1-0 with less than three minutes to
play in the first half as he headed Chris Rivet's corner kick past
Saint Joseph's goalkeeper Will
Pike, snapping his streak of 400 minutes played
without allowing a ball to get past him.
The Cadets doubled their lead midway through the second half when
Boyton took a pass from Nick Micucci and chipped it over
Pike to make it 2-0 at the 65:59 mark.
The Monks fought hard throughout the game, and finally beat Maxwell
in the 84th minute as MacCallum tallied a goal off
a nice assist from Kevin Melega
‘09 (Easthampton, MA). St. Joe's generated one more terrific
scoring chance in the final minutes, but the Norwich defense stood
tall.
The game was extremely physical with a total of 33 fouls being
whistled. Six yellow cards were also issued in the contest, with
each team picking up three apiece.
Norwich outshot the visitors, 33-11, and the Cadets held a 6-4 edge
in corner kicks.
Pike kept the Monks in the game throughout,
registering a season-high 17 saves on the day.
MacCallum scored all four of the Monks' goals in
the GNAC Tournament and has collected seven goals and two assists
in his last five games.
For Norwich, Przekaza was named the tournament's MVP and Boyton,
Bob Begin, Jon Amell and Drew Dilley were named to the
All-Tournament Team.
The Cadets' opponent in the NCAA Championship will be released on
Monday, when the official brackets are announced.
