Monks Trot Past Mustangs, 2-0

STANDISH, ME - Saint Joseph's improved to 8-5-1 overall and 5-2 in GNAC play with a 2-0 victory over conference rival Mount Ida College on Saturday afternoon at Westerlea Way Field. Doug MacCallum '10 (Hingham, MA) netted the game-winner in the 61st minute and Andre Cushing '10 (Hampden, ME) added a score three minutes later for the Monks in the triumph.

Will Pike '10 (Gorham, ME) made three saves to post his seventh shutout of the season and 15th of his career to surpass Michael Bolanz '00 in the Monks' career record book.

Jack LaFreniere '13 (Alton, NH) had three outstanding opportunities to put the Monks on the board in the first half, two of them being breakaways. The freshman phenom broke loose two minutes into the game, but Mustangs keeper Steven Enright '12 (South Kingston, RI) made a diving stop to his left to deny LaFreniere. Five minutes later LaFreniere had another free run at the net, but his attempt sailed wide left. Paul Robins '11 (Cornwall, England) set up LaFreniere with a crossing pass, but the header bid sailed wide left and the game remained scoreless heading into the intermission.

After outshooting the Mustangs 11-3 in the first half, the Monks finally found the back of the net with MacCallum's team-leading eighth goal of the season in the 16th minute of the latter stanza. The senior beat Enright with a header goal to the bottom left corner of the net off a crossing pass from Robins to give the hosts a 1-0 lead. The goal was MacCallum's fifth game-winner of the season.

Cushing doubled the Ida deficit three minutes later on somewhat of a freak goal. LaFreniere sent a ball into the box that hit the back of a defender and deflected to an open Cushing, who finished the play with a blast past Enright to cap the game scoring with the Monks ahead, 2-0.

St. Joe's held a commanding 21-5 lead in shots and a 10-3 advantage in shots on goal in the victory.

Saint Joseph's will play at Wheaton College on Sunday at 2:00 PM in a non-conference matchup, while Mount Ida will play at Suffolk in a GNAC contest on Wednesday at 6:00 PM.
