STANDISH, ME - Worcester State (1-3-0) defeated Saint Joseph's
(1-2-1), 2-0, on Thursday afternoon at Westerlea Way Field. The
Lancers scored two goals five minutes apart midway through the
second half to secure the victory. SJC keeper Will
Pike '10 (Gorham, ME) made eight saves in the
loss.
Miguel Vidal '10 (N. Grafton, MA) tallied a goal and an assist for
Worcester and Lancers goalie Evan Wilga '12 (Dudley, MA) made five
saves in the shutout bid.
St. Joe's nearly grabbed an early lead, as a header by
Andrew Roberts '10 (Ipswich, MA)
floated over the top of the Worcester net seven minutes into the
game. The near-goal was set up by Brandon
Noltkamper '11 (Bath, ME), who threw the ball in
from the corner on the right sideline. As it turned out, the early
opportunity would be one of the few for the Monks in the losing
effort.
The game was scoreless until the 69th minute when Dan Anthony '11
(Leominster, MA) beat Pike off a cross pass from
Vidal.
Five minutes later Vidal scored himself to make it a 2-0 contest.
Kerlenze Benjamin set up the play as he moved the ball upfield to
Vidal, who darted towards the net alone. Pike left
the goal to challenge, but Vidal place the ball past him to cap the
game scoring.
Worcester State outshot St. Joe's overall, 12-9, and steered nine
of those attempts on goal against just five on net from the
Monks.
St. Joe's will take on GNAC foe Johnson & Wales on Saturday at
1:00 PM in Providence, RI. Worcester State will play at Southern
Maine on Saturday at noon.
