Kean Tops St. Joe's in Xara Classic, 1-0

KEENE, NH – Kean University (2-1) used a 78th-minute goal to get past Saint Joseph's (1-1) in a Xara Classic Tournament match at Keene State College on Sunday.

Controlling an errant ball at the top of the box, Kharee Winslow '13 (Piscataway, NJ) drilled a shot that ricocheted off a Monk defender and into the net for the game-winner with 12:06 remaining in regulation to lift the Cougars to a 1-0 victory over St. Joe's.

Winslow had a chance to score earlier in the game, but his shot sailed just wide of the far post at the 30:16 mark of the second half.

The Monks' best scoring opportunity came just five minutes into the game when a Tyler Rand '13 (Westbrook, ME) header sailed over the cross-bar.

SJC keeper Nick Campasano '12 (Goffstown, NH) made three saves in the losing effort, while Kean keeper Alfredo Oquendo '11 (North Plainfield, NJ), selected as the tourney MVP, registered two stops on the day.  Rand and Jack LaFreniere '13 (Alton, NH) notched a pair of shots apiece for Saint Joseph's.

St. Joe's and Kean had never met on the soccer pitch before today's contest. The Cougars, who lost to Keene State 3-2 in overtime yesterday, appeared to be headed for the team's second extra-time match in as many days before Winslow's tally.

Kean held a 15-7 advantage in shots, and a 4-2 lead in shots on net, while the Monks edged the Cougars in corner kicks, 4-2.

Saint Joseph's will play at Worcester State on Thursday at 7:00 PM, while Kean is set to play at Virginia-Wesleyan in the Chick-fil-A Invitational on Friday at 7:30 PM.
